In 2001, Orange, a UK mobile network operator, announced the “Orange at Home” project, a smart house incorporating the latest technology wizardry built some 20 miles north of London. It was intended to be more than a mere showcase, with plans for real families to move in and live with the smart home. My then research establishment, the Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey, was commissioned to study how these families reacted to their new home, and to report lessons for the future development of smart homes and smart home technologies.

Resource allocation is an important issue in wireless communication networks. In recent decades, cognitive radio technology and cognitive radio-based networks have obtained more and more attention and have been well studied to improve spectrum utilization and to overcomethe problem of spectrum scarcity in future wireless com- munication systems. Many new challenges on resource allocation appear in cogni- tive radio-based networks. In this book, we focus on effective solutions to resource allocation in several important cognitive radio-based networks, including a cogni- tive radio-basedopportunisticspectrum access network, a cognitiveradio-basedcen- tralized network, a cognitive radio-based cellular network, a cognitive radio-based high-speed vehicle network, and a cognitive radio-based smart grid.

The large-scale deployment of the smart grid (SG) paradigm could play a strategic role in supporting the evolution of conventional electrical grids toward active, flexible and self- healing web energy networks composed of distributed and cooperative energy resources. From a conceptual point of view, the SG is the convergence of information and operational technologies applied to the electric grid, providing sustainable options to customers and improved security. Advances in research on SGs could increase the efficiency of modern electrical power systems by: (i) supporting the massive penetration of small-scale distributed and dispersed generators; (ii) facilitating the integration of pervasive synchronized metering systems; (iii) improving the interaction and cooperation between the network components; and (iv) allowing the wider deployment of self-healing and proactive control/protection paradigms.

Electric distribution networks are critical parts of power delivery systems. In recent years, many new technologies and distributed energy resources have been inte- grated into these networks. To provide electricity at the possible lowest cost and at required quality, long-term planning is essential for these networks. In distribution planning, optimal location and size of necessary upgrades are determined to satisfy the demand and the technical requirements of the loads and to tackle uncertainties associated with load and distributed energy resources.

The term “ smart grid ” defi nes a self - healing network equipped with dynamic optimiza- tion techniques that use real - time measurements to minimize network losses, maintain voltage levels, increase reliability, and improve asset management. The operational data collected by the smart grid and its sub - systems will allow system operators to rapidly identify the best strategy to secure against attacks, vulnerability, and so on, caused by various contingencies. However, the smart grid fi rst depends upon identifying and researching key performance measures, designing and testing appropriate tools, and developing the proper education curriculum to equip current and future personnel with the knowledge and skills for deployment of this highly advanced system.

With the continued growth in the world's population, there is a need to ensure availability of enough food to feed everyone. Advances in science and technology have helped not only to increase food production, but also to reduce food wastage. However, the latter has the potential to be improved to a significant extent through appropriate matching of supply and demand, and with proper handling during storage and transit. Given the amount of food wastage that occurs after a food item leaves the “farm” on its way to the “fork,” and the availability of means to reduce such wastage, there really is no excuse for feigned ignorance.

Internet of Things (IoT) [26] is a new networking paradigm for cyber-physical systems that allow physical objects to collect and exchange data. In the IoT, physical objects and cyber-agents can be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, which enables the integration between the physical world and computer-based systems and therefore extends the Internet into the real world. IoT can find numerous applications in smart housing, environmental monitoring, medical and health care systems, agriculture, transportation, etc. Because of its significant application potential, IoT has attracted a lot of attention from both academic research and industrial development.

Recent years have seen a rapid development of neural network control tech- niques and their successful applications. Numerous simulation studies and actual industrial implementations show that artificial neural network is a good candidate for function approximation and control system design in solving the control problems of complex nonlinear systems in the presence of different kinds of uncertainties. Many control approaches/methods, reporting inventions and control applications within the fields of adaptive control, neural control and fuzzy systems, have been published in various books, journals and conference proceedings.

Recent work has shown that convolutional networks can be substantially deeper, more accurate, and efficient to train if they contain shorter connections between layers close to the input and those close to the output. In this paper, we embrace this observation and introduce the Dense Convo- lutional Network (DenseNet), which connects each layer to every other layer in a feed-forward fashion.
