When we started thinking about writing this book, we had been working together for more than five years on the borderline between propagation and signal processing. Therefore, it is not surprising that this book deals with propagation models and design tools for MIMO wirelesscommunications.Yet, thisbookshouldconstitutemorethanasimplecombination of these two domains. It hopefully conveys our integrated understanding of MIMO, which results from endless controversial discussions on various multi-antenna related issues, as well as various interactions with numerous colleagues. Obviously, this area of technology is so large that it was beyond our aim to cover all aspects in details. Rather, our goal has been to provide researchers, R&D engineers and graduate students with a comprehensive coverage of radio propagation models and space–time coding techniques.

With the rapid growth of the wireless mobile applications, wireless voice has begun to challenge wireline voice, whereas the desire to access e-mail, surf the Web or download music (e.g., MP3) wirelessly is increasing for wireless data. While second generation (2G) cellular wireless systems, such as cdmaOne1, GSM2 and TDMA3, introduced digital technology to wireless cellular systems to deal with the increasing demand for wireless applications, there is still the need for more spectrally efficient technologies for two reasons. First, wireless voice capacity is expected to continue to grow. Second, the introduction of high-speed wireless data will require more bandwidth.

By definition, the term “mobile-radio communications” describes any radio communication link between two terminals of which one or both are in motion or halted at unspecified locations and of which one may actually be a fixed terminal such as a base station. This definition applies to both mobile-to-mobile and mobile-to-fixed radio communica- tion links. The mobile-to-mobile link could in fact consist of a mobile- to-fixed-to-mobile radio communication link. The term “mobile” applies to land vehicles, ships at sea, aircraft, and communications satellites. In tactical situations, mobile-radio systems may include any or all of these types of mobile terminals.

This book is a result of the recent rapid advances in two related technologies: com- munications and computers. Over the past few decades, communication systems have increased in complexity to the point where system design and performance analysis can no longer be conducted without a significant level of computer sup- port. Many of the communication systems of fifty years ago were either power or noise limited. A significant degrading effect in many of these systems was thermal noise, which was modeled using the additive Gaussian noise channel.

Digital mobile wireless communication and the Internet have undergone a fantastic growth in the last few years and, despite originating from two different worlds, they are converging. This convergence corresponds to the evolution of mobile systems towards the highest broadband data transmissions (GSM, EDGE/GPRS, UMTS then HSDPA), while the computing world gets equipped with wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi or Wi-Max.

Convergence between the two largest networks (Telecom and IP) is taking place very rapidly and at diff erent levels: (1) network level: unifi cation of IP networks with traditional Telecom networks through evolving standards (Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Realtime Transfer Protocol (RTP), SS7, 3G) to support interopera- bility; (2) service level: traditional Telecom services like voice calls are being provi- sioned on the IP backbone (VoIP), while traditional IP services (most data-driven services such as multimedia, browsing, chatting, gaming, etc.) are accessible over the Telecom network.

Some tine ago it become apparent the the first edition of this book was rapidly approaching its sell-by date, since many aspects needed revise. There were two obvious courses of action : to forget the whole thing and concentrate my energies on other pursuits such as golf or fishing, or to embark on a new edition. For several reasons Iwas persuaded that a new edition was a worthwhile endeavour;many people had made complimentary remakrs or written complinentary letters about the first edition and I understood that it had become a recommended text for several postgraduate coures.

In the two years since this book was first published, ultra wideband (UWB) has advanced and consolidated as a technology, and many more people are aware of the possibilities for this exciting technology. We too have expanded and consolidated materials in this second edition in the hope that ‘Ultra Wideband: Signals and Systems in Communication Engineering’ will continue to prove a useful tool for many students and engineers to come to an understanding of the basic technologies for UWB.

Telecommunications is today widely understood to mean the electrical means of communicating over a distance. The first form of telecommunications was that of the Telegraph, which was invented quite independently in 1837 by two scientists, Wheatstone and Morse. Telegraphy was on a point-to-point unidirectional basis and relied on trained operators to interpret between the spoken or written word and the special signals sent over the telegraph wire. However, the use of telegraphy did greatly enhance the operations of railways and, of course, the dissemination of news and personal messages between towns.

Once upon a time, cellular wireless networks provided two basic services: voice telephony and low-rate text messaging. Users in the network were separated by orthogonal multiple access schemes, and cells by generous frequency reuse patterns [1]. Since then, the proliferation of wireless services, fierce competition, andthe emergenceof new service classes such as wireless data and multimediahave resulted in an ever increasing pressure on network operators to use resources in a moreefficient manner. In the contextof wireless networks, two of the most common resources are power and spectrum—and, due to regulations, these resources are typically scarce. Hence, in contrast to wired networks, overprovisioning is not feasible in wireless networks.
