Wireless means different things to different people. For this book, it refers to the radio systems that provide point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and Earth-space communications over transmission links that propagate outside buildings through the lower atmosphere. Wireless systems are being built that provide data transmission between computers and other devices on one’s own desk. These are part of the wireless world but not the part where, except for interference perhaps, the atmosphere has any influence. The intent of this book is to provide a description of the physical phenomena that can affect propagation through the atmosphere, present sample measurements and statistics, and provide models that system designers can use to calculate their link budgets and estimate the limitations the atmosphere may place on their design.

Over many years, RF-MEMS have been a hot topic in research at the technology and device level. In particular, various kinds of mechanical Si-MEMS resonators and piezoelectric BAW (bulk acoustic wave) resonators have been developed. This book concentrates on web based enterprise energy and building automation systems, and serves as a capstone volume in this series. The thrust here is that the highest level functions of a building and facility automation system are provided by a web based EIS/ECS system that provides energy management, maintenance management, overall facility operational management, and ties in with the enterprise resource management system for the entire facility or the group of facilities being managed. If there were ever to be a fourth volume in this series, it would follow the logical progression of the first three volumes, and would probably be titled Web Based Enterprise Resource Management Systems.
