  • The Staged Event-Driven Architecture (SEDA) is a new design for building scalable Internet services.

    The Staged Event-Driven Architecture (SEDA) is a new design for building scalable Internet services. SEDA has three major goals: To support massive concurrency, on the order of tens of thousands of clients per node To exhibit robust performance under wide variations in load and, To simplify the design of complex Internet services. SEDA decomposes a complex, event-driven application into a set of stages connected by queues. This design avoids the high overhead associated with thread-based concurrency models, and decouples event and thread scheduling from application logic. SEDA enables services to be well-conditioned to load, preventing resources from being overcommitted when demand exceeds service capacity. Decomposing services into a set of stages also enables modularity and code reuse, as well as the development of debugging tools for complex event-driven applications.

    This paper presents several low-latency mixed-timing FIFO (first-in–first-out) interfaces designs that interface systems on a chip working at different speeds. The connected systems can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The designs are then adapted to work between systems with very long interconnect delays, by migrating a single-clock solution by Carloni et al. (1999, 2000, and 2001) (for “latency-insensitive” protocols) to mixed-timing domains. The new designs can be made arbitrarily robust with regard to metastability and interface operating speeds. Initial simulations for both latency and throughput are promising.

    A general technique for the recovery of signi cant image features is presented. The technique is based on the mean shift algorithm, a simple nonparametric pro- cedure for estimating density gradients. Drawbacks of the current methods (including robust clustering) are avoided. Feature space of any nature can be processed, and as an example, color image segmentation is dis- cussed. The segmentation is completely autonomous, only its class is chosen by the user. Thus, the same program can produce a high quality edge image, or pro- vide, by extracting all the signi cant colors, a prepro- cessor for content-based query systems.     A one-dimensional calibration object consists of three or more collinear points with known relative positions. It is generally believed that a camera can be calibrated only when a 1D calibration object is in planar motion or rotates around a ¯ xed point. In this paper, it is proved that when a multi-camera is observing a 1D object undergoing general rigid motions synchronously, the camera set can be linearly calibrated. A linear algorithm for the camera set calibration is proposed,and then the linear estimation is further re¯ ned using the maximum likelihood criteria. The simulated and real image experiments show that the proposed algorithm is valid and robust.
