  • Building Future Smart Cities

The world population is continuously growing and reached a significant evolution of the society, where the number of people living in cities surpassed the number of people in rural areas.

  • A Rate Adaptive Channel Estimation Approach

In this paper, we consider the channel estimation problem in Millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless systems with large antenna arrays. By exploiting the inherent sparse nature of the mmWave channel, we develop a novel rate-adaptive channel estimation (RACE) algorithm, which can adaptively adjust the number of required channel measurements based on an expected probability of estimation error (PEE).

  • Fading+and+Shadowing+in+Wireless+Systems

During the past two decades there has been a substantial growth in research in wireless communications. The number of journals published from various parts of the world catering to the research community has grown exponentially. Despite such a growth, the engineering community still needs more information so as to thoroughly comprehend wireless channel characteristics. What specifically must be understood are the effects of channel degradation brought on by statistical fluctua- tions in the channel.

  • High-Frequency Oscillator Design

OSCILLATORS are key building blocks in integrated transceivers. In wired and wireless communication terminals, the receiver front-end selects, amplifies and converts the desired high-frequency signal to baseband. At baseband the signal can then be converted into the digital domain for further data processing and demodula- tion. The transmitter front-end converts an analog baseband signal to a suitable high- frequency signal that can be transmitted over the wired or wireless channel.

  • Next-Generation+Wireless+Technologies

In the past few decades, a technological revolution has occurred that has changed the way we live in dramatic ways. This technological revolution is the result of the emergence and evolution of a wide variety of new wireless networking tech- nologies. Now people using these technologies are able to access the network and control many applications at will with their handheld devices anywhere, anytime. Although these technologies have made a long lasting impact in the revolution, it has also opened up various challenging issues which are yet to be resolved to make them more efficient and cost-effective.

  • Power+Control+in+Wireless+Cellular+Networks

Transmit power in wireless cellular networks is a key degree of freedom in the management of interference, energy, and connectivity. Power control in both uplink and downlink of a cellular network has been extensively studied, especially over the last 15 years, and some of the results have enabled the continuous evolution and significant impact of the digital cellular technology.

  • RF Imperfections

The unguided transmission of information using electromagnetic waves at radio frequency (RF) is often referred to as wireless communications, the first demonstration of which took place at the end of the 19th cen- tury and is attributed to Hertz. The technology was, shortly thereafter, commercialised by, amongst others, Marconi in one of the first wire- less communication systems, i.e., wireless telegraphy. In the first half of the 20th century the technology was developed further to enable more than the mere transmission of Morse code. This first resulted in uni- directional radio broadcasting and several years later also in television broadcasting.

  • Software+Defined+Radio

Until the mid-1990s most readers would probably not have even come across the term soft- ware defined radio (SDR), let alone had an idea what it referred to. Since then SDR has made the transition from obscurity to mainstream, albeit still with many different understandings of the terms – software radio, software defined radio, software based radio, reconfigurable radio.

  • Systems+Engineering+in+Wireless+Communications

In Helsinki during a visiting lecture, an internationally well-known professor in communica- tionssaid,‘Inthecommunicationssocietywehavemanagedtoconvertourproposalsandideas to real products, not like in the control engineering society. They have very nice papers and strong mathematics but most of the real systems still use the old PID controllers!’. As our background is mainly in control as well as communications engineering, we know that this thought is not very accurate. We agree that most of the practical controllers are analog and digital PID controllers, simply because they are very reliable and able to achieve the required control goals successfully. Most of the controllers can be explained in terms of PID. The reasons behind this impressive performance of PID will be explained in Chapter 2.

  • Understanding+Telecommunications+Networks

Telecommunications is today widely understood to mean the electrical means of communicating over a distance. The first form of telecommunications was that of the Telegraph, which was invented quite independently in 1837 by two scientists, Wheatstone and Morse. Telegraphy was on a point-to-point unidirectional basis and relied on trained operators to interpret between the spoken or written word and the special signals sent over the telegraph wire. However, the use of telegraphy did greatly enhance the operations of railways and, of course, the dissemination of news and personal messages between towns.
