The single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) system is a well-known system that has recently become a preferred choice for mobile uplink channels. This is attributed to its advantages such as the low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and the use of frequency domain equalizers. Low PAPR Allows the system to relax the specifications of linearity in the power amplifier of the mobile terminal, which reduces cost and power consumption.

Radio frequency spectrum is a scarce and critical natural resource that is utilized for many services including surveillance, navigation, communication, and broadcast- ing. Recent years have seen tremendous growth in the use of spectrum especially by commercial cellular operators. Ubiquitous use of smartphones and tablets is one of the reasons behind an all-time high utilization of spectrum. As a result, cellular operators are experiencing a shortage of radio spectrum to meet bandwidth demands of users. On the other hand, spectrum measurements have shown that much spectrum not held by cellular operators is underutilized even in dense urban areas. This has motivated shared access to spectrum by secondary systems with no or minimal impact on incumbent systems. Spectrum sharing is a promising approach to solve the problem of spectrum congestion as it Allows cellular operators access to more spectrum in order to satisfy the ever-growing bandwidth demands of commercial users.

Recent advances in wireless communication technologies have had a transforma- tive impact on society and have directly contributed to several economic and social aspects of daily life. Increasingly, the untethered exchange of information between devices is becoming a prime requirement for further progress, which is placing an ever greater demand on wireless bandwidth. The ultra wideband (UWB) system marks a major milestone in this progress. Since 2002, when the FCC allowed the unlicensed use of low-power, UWB radio signals in the 3.1–10.6GHz frequency band, there has been significant synergistic advance in this technology at the cir- cuits, architectural and communication systems levels. This technology Allows for devices to communicate wirelessly, while coexisting with other users by ensuring that its power density is sufficiently low so that it is perceived as noise to other users.

Nowadays sensors are part of everyday life in a wide variety of fields: scientific applications, medical instrumentation, industrial field, ...and, last but not least, popular mass production and low-cost goods, like smartphones and other mobile devices. Markets and business behind the field of sensors are quite impressive. A common trend for consumer applications is miniaturization which requires, on one side, a lot of research, development efforts, and resources but, on the other hand, Allows costs and final application size reduction. In this scenario scientific community and industries are very active to drive innovation.

It has been said that the move from narrowband to broadband access is the second revolution for the Internet — ‘broadband is more bandwidth than you can use’. Once users have experienced broadband access there is no turning back. A whole new world of applications and services becomes possible. No longer is it the ‘world- wide wait’. The speed of response and visual quality enabled by broadband finally Allows the Internet to reach its true potential.

We are in the era of ubiquitous computing in which the use and development of Radio Frequency Iden- tification (RFID) is becoming more widespread. RFID systems have three main components: readers, tags, and database. An RFID tag is composed of a small microchip, limited logical functionality, and an antenna. Most common tags are passive and harvest energy from a nearby RFID reader. This energy is used both to energize the chip and send the answer back to the reader request. The tag provides a unique identifier (or an anonymized version of that), which Allows the unequivocal identification of the tag holder (i.e. person, animal, or items).

There exist two essentially different approaches to the study of dynamical systems, based on the following distinction: time-continuous nonlinear differential equations ⇋ time-discrete maps One approach starts from time-continuous differential equations and leads to time-discrete maps, which are obtained from them by a suitable discretization of time. This path is pursued, e.g., in the book by Strogatz [Str94]. 1 The other approach starts from the study of time-discrete maps and then gradually builds up to time-continuous differential equations, see, e.g., [Ott93, All97, Dev89, Has03, Rob95]. After a short motivation in terms of nonlinear differential equations, for the rest of this course we shall follow the latter route to dynamical systems theory. This Allows a generally more simple way of introducing the important concepts, which can usually be carried over to a more complex and physically realistic context.

Research on microwave power amplififiers has gained a growing importance demanded by the many continuously developing applications which require such subsystem performance. A broad set of commercial and strategic systems in fact have their overall performance boosted by the power amplififier, the latter becoming an enabling component wherever its effificiency and output power actually Allows functionalities and operating modes previously not possible. This is the case for the many wireless systems and battery-operated systems that form the substrate of everyday life, but also of high-performance satellite and dual-use systems.
