This project features a full-hardware sound compressor using the well known algorithm: IMA ADPCM. The core acts as a slave WISHBONE device. The output is perfectly compatible with any sound player with the IMA ADPCM codec (included by default in every Windows). Includes a testbench that takes an uncompressed PCM 16 bits Mono WAV file and outputs an IMA ADPCM compressed WAV file. Compression ratio is fixed for IMA-ADPCM, being 4:1. PLEASE NOTICE THAT THIS CORE IS LICENSED under http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ (Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported). The software and hardware development fields evolved along separate paths through the end of the 20th century. We seem to have come full circle, however. The previously rigid hardware on which our programs run is softening in many ways. Embedded systems are largely responsible for this softening. These hidden computing systems drive the electronic products around us, including consumer products like digital cameras and personal digital assistants, office automation equipment like copy machines and printers, medical devices like heart monitors and ventilators, and automotive electronics like cruise controls and antilock brakes. Embedded systems force designers to work under incredibly tight time-tomarket, power consumption, size, performance, flexibility, and cost constraints. Many technologies introduced over the past two decades have sought to help satisfy these constraints. To understand these technologies, it is important to first distinguish the underlying embedded systems elements.

C++ is a programming language. It is a programming language of many different dialects, just like each language that is spoken has many dialects. In C though, they are not because the "speakers" live in the North, South, or grew up in some other place, it is because there are so many compilers. There are about four major ones: Borland C++, Microsoft Visual C++, Watcom C/386, and DJGPP. You can download DJGPP http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/ or you may already have another compiler. Each of these compilers is a little different. The library functions of one will have all of the standard C++ functions, but they will also have other functions or, continuing the analogy, words. At times, this can lead to confusion, as certain programs will only run under certain compilers, though I do not believe this to be the case with the programs in these tutorials.
