Toolbox for Numerical Computing with MATLAB (by Cleve Moler). Numerical Computing with MATLAB (by Cleve Moler) is a textbook for an introductory course in numerical methods, Matlab, and technical computing. The emphasis is on in- formed use of mathematical software. We want you learn enough about the mathe- matical functions in Matlab that you will be able to use them correctly, appreciate their limitations, and modify them when necessary to suit your own needs. The topics include * introduction to Matlab, * linear equations, * interpolation, * zero and roots, * least squares, * quadrature, * ordinary di?erential equations, * random numbers, * Fourier analysis, * eigenvalues and singular values, * partial differential equations.

The Ruby Way takes a "how-to" approach to Ruby programming with the bulk of the material consisting of more than 400 examples arranged by topic. Each example answers the question "How do I do this in Ruby?" Working along with the author, you are presented with the task description and a discussion of the technical constraints. This is followed by a step-by-step presentation of one good solution. Along the way, the author provides detailed commentary and explanations to aid your understanding.

The production of this book required the efforts of many people, but two in particular deserve to be singled out for their diligent, sustained, and unselfish efforts. Sally Stickney, the book s principal editor, navigated me through that minefield called the English language and contributed greatly to the book s readability. Marc Young, whose talents as a technical editor are nothing short of amazing, was relentless in tracking down bugs, testing sample code, and verifying facts. Sally, Marc: This book is immeasurably better because of you. Thanks.

We both want to thank everyone at Microsoft Press and all the people who reviewed the manuscript for their kind support throughout this project. Eric Stroo, thanks for your patience as we completed the chapters (not always as fast as you wanted them). Sally Stickney and Rebecca McKay, thanks for your excellent job editing the manuscript and making it readable. Sally Stickney and John Pierce, thanks for managing the project. Jim Fuchs at Microsoft Press, Jason Whittington at DevelopMentor, and Rick Watson at RogueWave Software, thanks for doing technical reviews of our manuscript.

This book is designed to teach you the best practices in developing Windows DNA applications. We have avoided making this book a primer on every technology associated with Windows DNA. If we had followed this course, this would be an encyclopedia set. Everyone has their favorite authors and books on the various technical subject areas. The market is full of books to teach you the basics, the how, this book tries to be different in that we pull out the important points to teach you about the why. If you need training in a particular technology covered in this book, Sams has a number of 24-hour and 21-day books that cover a wide range of topics.

Boost provides free peer-reviewed portable C++ source libraries. We emphasize libraries that work well with the C++ Standard Library. Boost libraries are intended to be widely useful, and usable across a broad spectrum of applications. The Boost license encourages both commercial and non-commercial use. We aim to establish "existing practice" and provide reference implementations so that Boost libraries are suitable for eventual standardization. Ten Boost libraries are already included in the C++ Standards Committee s Library technical Report (TR1) as a step toward becoming part of a future C++ Standard. More Boost libraries are proposed for the upcoming TR2. Boost works on almost any modern operating system, including UNIX and Windows variants. Follow the Getting Started Guide to download and install Boost. Popular Linux and Unix distributions such as Fedora, Debian, and NetBSD include pre-built Boost packages. Boost may also already be available on your organization s internal web server.

Linux was first released into an unsuspecting world in the summer of 1991. Initially the spare-time hobby of a Finnish computer scientist by the name of Linus Torvalds, Linux was at first accessible only in software source code form to those with enough expertise to build and install it. Early enthusiasts (most also developers themselves by necessity) exploited the growth of the Internet in the early 1990s as a means to build online communities and drive development forward. These communities helped to build the first Linux software distributions, containing all the software components needed to install and use a Linux system without requiring users to be technical experts.

This book brings together indispensable knowledge for building efficient, high-value, Linux-based embedded products: information that has never been assembled in one place before. Drawing on years of experience as an embedded Linux consultant and field application engineer, Christopher Hallinan offers solutions for the specific technical issues you re most likely to face, demonstrates how to build an effective embedded Linux environment, and shows how to use it as productively as possible.

Fortran has always been the principal language used in the fields of scientific, numerical, and engineering programming, and a series of revisions to the standard defining successive versions of the language has progressively enhanced its power and kept it competitive with several generations of rivals. Beginning in 1978, the technical committee responsible for the development of Fortran standards, X3J3 (now called J3), laboured to produce a new, much- needed modern version of the language, Fortran 90. Its purpose is to "promote portability, reliability, maintainability, and efficient execution... on a variety of computing systems". The standard was published in 1991, and work began in 1993 on a minor revision, known informally as Fortran 95. Now this revised
