Wireless technologies like GSM, UMTS, LTE, Wireless LAN and Bluetooth have revolu- tionized the way we communicate and exchange data by making services like telephony and Internet access available anytime and from almost anywhere. Today, a great variety of techni- cal publications offer background information about these technologies but they all fall short in one way or another. Books covering these technologies usually describe only one of the systems in detail and are generally too complex as a first introduction. The Internet is also a good source, but the articles one finds are usually too short and superficial or only deal with a specific mechanism of one of the systems. For this reason, it was difficult for me to recom- mend a single publication to students in my telecommunication classes, which I have been teaching in addition to my work in the wireless telecommunication industry. This book aims to change this.

This books attempts to provide an extensive overview on Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Understanding LTE and its Performance is purposely written to appeal to a broad audience and to be of value to anyone who is interested in 3GPP LTE or wireless broadband networks more generally. The aim of this book is to offer comprehensive coverage of current state-of-the-art theoretical and techno- logical aspects of broadband mobile and wireless networks focusing on LTE. The presentation starts from basic principles and proceeds smoothly to most advanced topics. Provided schemes are developed and oriented in the context of very actual closed standards, the 3 GPPP LTE.

Microwave radio network design is a subset of activities that constitute the overall transmission network design. Transmission networks are sometimes called transport networks, access networks, or connectivity networks. For many wireless carriers, microwave is becoming a popu- lar preference over wireline (leased lines) transport for many reasons, especially as microwave radio equipment costs decrease and installation becomes simpler. Low monthly operating costs can undercut those of typical single (and especially multiple) T1/E1 expenses, proving it to be more economical over the long term—usually two to four years. Network operators also like the fact that they can own and control microwave radio networks instead of relying on other service providers for network components.

By definition, the term “mobile-radio communications” describes any radio communication link between two terminals of which one or both are in motion or halted at unspecified locations and of which one may actually be a fixed terminal such as a base station. This definition applies to both mobile-to-mobile and mobile-to-fixed radio communica- tion links. The mobile-to-mobile link could in fact consist of a mobile- to-fixed-to-mobile radio communication link. The term “mobile” applies to land vehicles, ships at sea, aircraft, and communications satellites. In tactical situations, mobile-radio systems may include any or all of these types of mobile terminals.

Optical wireless communication is an emerging and dynamic research and development area that has generated a vast number of interesting solutions to very complicated communication challenges. For example, high data rate, high capacity and minimum interference links for short-range communication for inter-building communication, computer-to-computer communication, or sensor networks. At the opposite extreme is a long-range link in the order of millions of kilometers in the new mission to Mars and other solar system planets.

The roots of this book were planted about a decade ago. At that time, I became increasingly convinced that wide-area and metropolitan-area networks, where much of my group’s research has been centered at that time, were in good shape. Although research in these fields was (and still is) needed, that’s not where the networking bottleneck seemed to be. Rather, the bottleneck was (and still is in many places) in the access networks, which choked users’ access to information and services. It was clear to me that the long-term solution to that problem has to involve optical fiber access networks.

Communication protocols – for short protocols – form the basis for the opera- tion of computer networks and telecommunication systems. They are behavior conventions which describe how communication systems interact with each other in computer networks. Protocols define the temporal order of the interactions and the formats of the data units exchanged. Communication protocols comprise a wide range of different functions and mechanisms, such as the sending and receiv- ing of data units, their coding/decoding, error control mechanisms, timer control, flow control, and many others.

One of the prerequisites for the development of telecommunication services is the understanding of the propagation of the waves, either acoustic, electromagnetic, radio or light waves, which are used for the transmission of information. In this work, we shall limit ourselves to the study of radio waves: this term apply to the electromagnetic waves used in radio communications. Their frequency spectrum is very broad, and is divided into the following frequency bands : ELF waves (f < 3 kHz), VLF (3-30 kHz), LF waves (30-300 kHz), MF waves (300-3000 kHz), HF (3-30 MHz), VHF waves (30-300 MHz), UHF waves (300-3000 MHz), SHF waves (3-30 GHz), EHF waves (30-300 GHz) and sub- EHF waves (300-3000 GHz).

The first gem of wisdom I ever acquired about consulting, obtained many years ago from a former schoolmate, was to ensure that everything is plugged in: no continuity, no data. Wires carry voltages and currents from one place to another. Their behavior is reasonably simple and predictable—at least for sufficiently low data rates and short lengths—and they can be seen, grabbed, traced, and tugged.
