The field of digital communicaTION has evolved rapidly in the past few decades, with commercial applications proliferating in wireline communi- cation networks (e.g., digital subscriber loop, cable, fiber optics), wireless communicaTION (e.g., cell phones and wireless local area networks), and stor- age media (e.g., compact discs, hard drives). The typical undergraduate and graduate student is drawn to the field because of these applications, but is often intimidated by the mathematical background necessary to understand communicaTION theory.

The writing of this book was prompted by two main developments in wireless communicaTIONs in the past decade. First is the huge surge of research activities in physical-layer wireless communicaTION theory. The genesis for this book was my involvement with the development of the SystemView (now SystemVue) simulation program at Elanix, Inc. Over several years of development, technical support, and seminars, several issues kept recur- ring. This book is a result of the recent rapid advances in two related technologies: com- munications and computers. Over the past few decades, communicaTION systems have increased in complexity to the point where system design and performance analysis can no longer be conducted without a significant level of computer sup- port. Many of the communicaTION systems of fifty years ago were either power or noise limited. A significant degrading effect in many of these systems was thermal noise, which was modeled using the additive Gaussian noise channel.
