Cognitive radios have become a vital solution that allows sharing of the scarce frequency spectrum avAIlable for wireless systems. It has been demonstrated that it can be used for future wireless systems as well as integrated into 4G/5G wireless systems. Although there is a great amount of literature in the design of cognitive radios from a system and networking point of view, there has been very limited avAIlable literature detailing the circuit implementation of such systems. Our textbook, Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit Design for Cognitive Radios, is the first book to fill a disconnect in the literature between Cognitive Radio systems and a detailed account of the circuit implementation and architectures required to implement such systems. In addition, this book describes several novel concepts that advance state-of-the-art cognitive radio systems.

Since the first edition of the book was published, the field of modeling and simulation of communication systems has grown and matured in many ways, and the use of simulation as a day-to-day tool is now even more common practice. Many new modeling and simulation approaches have been developed in the recent years, many more commercial simulation packages are avAIlable, and the evolution of powerful general mathematical applications packages has provided still more options for computer-aided design and analysis. With the current interest in digital mobile communications, a primary area of application of modeling and simulation is now to wireless systems of a different flavor than the traditional ones.

Before I can present design concepts or tactical wireless communications and network challenges, I feel the need to mention the challenges of writing for a field where some information is not avAIlable for public domain and cannot be included in this book’s context. Another challenge is the use of military jargon and the extensive number of abbreviations (and abbreviations of abbreviations!) in the field. Engineering books are naturally dry, and I have attempted to make it light by presenting the concepts in layman’s terms before diving into the technical details. I am structuring this book in such a way as to make it useful for a specialized graduate course in tactical communications and networking, or as a reference book in the field.

The mature CMOS fabrication processes are avAIlable in many IC foundries. It is cost-effective to leverage the existing CMOS fabrication technologies to implement MEMS devices. On the other hand, the MEMS devices could also add values to the IC industry as the Moore’s law reaching its limit. Thanks to the advances in micromachining fabrication technologies and significant cost reduction due to mass production, miniature sensors of angular rate, or gyroscopes, found their way into the everyday life of every user of modern gadgets, such as smart phones, tablets or even wristwatches.
