We show in the context of a new economic geography model that when labor is heterogenous trade liberalization may lead to industrial agglomeration and inter-regional trade. Labor heterogeneity gives local monopoly power to firms but also introduces variations in the quality of the job match. Matches are likely to be better when there are more firms and workers in the local market, giving rise to an agglomeration force which can offset the forces against, trade costs and the erosion of monopoly power. We derive analytically a robust agglomeration equilibrium and illustrate its properties with numerical SimulATions

In this first part of the book the Vienna Link Level (LL) Simulators are described. The first chapter provides basics of LL SimulATions, introduces the most common variables and parameters as well as the transceiver structures that are applied in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and Long-Term Evolution-Advanced (LTEA). We focus here mostly on the Downlink (DL) of LTE as most results reported in later chapters are related to DL transmissions.

Thepredecessorvolumeofthisbookwaspublishedin1996.Intheyears since then, some things have changed and some have not. Two of the things that have not changed are the desire for better models and faster SimulATions. I performed the original SimulATions on my “hyperfast” 133-MHz computer! At the time, I thought if I could just getafastercomputer, allofourSPICEproblemswouldbehistory, right? TodayIamsimulatingonacomputerthathasa2.6-GHzprocessorwith 512 MB of RAM, and I would still say that SimulATions run too slow. The computer technology has evolved, but so have the models. In 1996 wewereperformingSimulATionson100-kHzpowerconverters,whereas today I routinely see 1- and 2-MHz power converters.

Simulation is experimentation with models. For system design, research, and edu- cation, SimulATions must not only construct and modify many different models but also store and access a large volume of results. That is practical only with models programmed on computers [1,2]
