Recent decades have shown a tremendous expansion of the Internet. The number of connected terminals has increased by orders of magnitude, traffic has grown exponen- tially, coverage has become ubiquitous and worldwide, and today’s sophisticated Web 2.0 applications are increasingly providing services which hitherto have been the realm of telecommunications, such as Skype and video conferencing. This has even led to the thought that access to the Internet might one day be a universal right of every citizen. This evolution will accelerate in the coming decades.

Short-range communications is one of the most relevant as well as diversified fields of en- deavour in wireless communications. As such, it has been a subject of intense research and development worldwide, particularly in the last decade. There is no reason to believe that this trend will decline. On the contrary, the rapidly crystallizing vision of a hyper-connected world will certainly strengthen the role of short-range communications in the future. Concepts such as wireless social networks, Internet of things, car communications, home and office network- ing, wireless grids and Personal communications heavily rely on short-range communications technology.

The use of mobile devices now surpasses that of traditional computers: wireless users will hence soon be demanding the same rich multimedia services on their mobile devices that they have on their desktop Personal computers. In addition, new services will be added, especially related with their mobile needs, such as location-based information services.

Telecommunications is today widely understood to mean the electrical means of communicating over a distance. The first form of telecommunications was that of the Telegraph, which was invented quite independently in 1837 by two scientists, Wheatstone and Morse. Telegraphy was on a point-to-point unidirectional basis and relied on trained operators to interpret between the spoken or written word and the special signals sent over the telegraph wire. However, the use of telegraphy did greatly enhance the operations of railways and, of course, the dissemination of news and Personal messages between towns.

Today wireless is becoming the leader in communication choices among users. It is not anymore a backup solution for nomadic travellers but really a newmoodnaturallyusedeverywhereevenwhenthewiredcommunicationsare possible. Many technologies evolve then continuously, changing the telecom- munication world. We talk about wireless local area networks (WLANs), wire- less Personal area networks (WPANs), wireless metropolitan area networks (WMANs), wireless wide area networks (WWANs), mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and mesh networks. Since we can find today a multitude of wireless technologies we decided to group a numberofcomplementarytechnologiesintoonedocumenttomakeiteasierfor areadertounderstandsomeofthetechnicaldetailsofeachmedia.

During the past three decades, the world has seen signifi cant changes in the telecom- munications industry. There has been rapid growth in wireless communications, as seen by large expansion in mobile systems. Wireless communications have moved from fi rst-generation (1G) systems primarily focused on voice communications to third-generation (3G) systems dealing with Internet connectivity and multi-media applications. The fourth-generation (4G) systems will be designed to connect wire- less Personal area networks (WPANs), wireless local area networks (WLANs) and wireless wide-area networks (WWANs).

The advent of modern wireless devices, such as smart phones and MID 1 terminals, has revolutionized the way people think of Personal connectivity. Such devices encompass multiple applications ranging from voice and video to high-speed data transfer via wireless networks. The voracious appetite of twenty-first century users for supporting more wireless applications on a single device is ever increasing. These devices employ multiple radios and modems that cover multiple frequency bands and multiple standards with a manifold of wireless applications often running simultaneously.

Over the past few decades there has been an exponential growth in service robots and smart home technologies, which has led to the development of exciting new products in our daily lives. Service robots can be used to provide domestic aid for the elderly and disabled, serving various functions ranging from cleaning to enter- tainment. Service robots are divided by functions, such as Personal robots, field robots, security robots, healthcare robots, medical robots, rehabilitation robots and entertainment robots. A smart home appears “intelligent” because its embedded computers can monitor so many aspects of the daily lives of householders. For example, the refrigerator may be able to monitor its contents, suggest healthy alter- natives and order groceries. Also, the smart home system may be able to clean the house and water the plants.
