The continued reduction of INtegrated circuit feature sizes and commensurate improvements in device performance are fueling the progress to higher functionality and new application areas. For example, over the last 15 years, the performance of microprocessors has increased 1000 times. Analog circuit performance has also improved, albeit at a slower pace. For example, over the same period the speed/resolution figure-of-merit of analog-to-digital converters improved by only a factor 10.

OSCILLATORS are key building blocks in INtegrated transceivers. In wired and wireless communication terminals, the receiver front-end selects, amplifies and converts the desired high-frequency signal to baseband. At baseband the signal can then be converted into the digital domain for further data processing and demodula- tion. The transmitter front-end converts an analog baseband signal to a suitable high- frequency signal that can be transmitted over the wired or wireless channel.

When we started thinking about writing the first edition of this book a few years ago, we had been working together for more than five years on the borderline between propagation and signal processing. Therefore, it is not surprising that this book deals with propagation models and design tools for MIMO wireless communications. Yet, this book should constitute more than a simple combination of these two domains. It hopefully conveys our INtegrated understanding of MIMO, which results from endless controversial discussions on various multi-antenna related issues, as well as various interactions with numerous colleagues. Obviously, this area of technology is so large that it is beyond our aim to cover all aspects in details. Rather, our goal is to provide researchers, R&D engineers and graduate students with a comprehensive coverage of radio propagation models and space–time signal processing techniques for multi-antenna, multi-user and multi-cell networks.

his research aims at creating broadband tunable, fully INtegrated filters for the application of cognitive radio and signal classification receivers. The approach under study is the N-path filter technique which is capable of translating a baseband impedance to a reference frequency creating a tunable filter. The traditional N-path filter suffers from fundamental architectural limitations, namely : a trade-off between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection, reference clock feed- through, and jammer power handling limitations. In the first approach, the fundamental trade- off of the traditional N-path filter between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection is improved by a transmission line (T-line) N-path filter technique.

Cognitive radios have become a vital solution that allows sharing of the scarce frequency spectrum available for wireless systems. It has been demonstrated that it can be used for future wireless systems as well as INtegrated into 4G/5G wireless systems. Although there is a great amount of literature in the design of cognitive radios from a system and networking point of view, there has been very limited available literature detailing the circuit implementation of such systems. Our textbook, Radio Frequency INtegrated Circuit Design for Cognitive Radios, is the first book to fill a disconnect in the literature between Cognitive Radio systems and a detailed account of the circuit implementation and architectures required to implement such systems. In addition, this book describes several novel concepts that advance state-of-the-art cognitive radio systems.

This book is concerned with INtegrated circuits and systems for wireless and mobile communications. Circuit techniques and implementation of reconfigurable low-voltage and low-power single-chip CMOS transceivers for multiband and multi- mode universal wireless communications are the focus of the book. Applications encompass both long-range mobile cellular communications (GSM and UMTS) and short-range wireless LANs (IEEE802.11 and Bluetooth). Recent advances in research into transceiver architecture, RF frontend, analogue baseband, RF CAD and automatic testing are reported.
