Much of Game Theory has developed within the community of Economists, starting from the book “Theory of Games and Economic behavior” by Mor- genstern and Von Neumann (1944). To a lesser extent, it has had an impact on biology (with the DEVELOPMENT of evolutionarygames) and on road traffic Engi- neering (triggered by the concept of Wardrop equilibrium introduced already in 1952 along with the Beckmann potential approach introduced in 1956). Since 1999 game theory has had a remarkable penetration into computer sci- ence with the formation of the community of Algorithmic game theory.

The genesis for this book was my involvement with the DEVELOPMENT of the SystemView (now SystemVue) simulation program at Elanix, Inc. Over several years of DEVELOPMENT, technical support, and seminars, several issues kept recur- ring. One common question was, “How do you simulate (such and such)?” The sec- ond set of issues was based on modern communication systems, and why particular developers did what they did. In the nineteenth century, scientists, mathematician, engineers and innovators started investigating electromagnetism. The theory that underpins wireless communications was formed by Maxwell. Early demonstrations took place by Hertz, Tesla and others. Marconi demonstrated the first wireless transmission. Since then, the range of applications has expanded at an immense rate, together with the underpinning technology. The rate of DEVELOPMENT has been incredible and today the level of technical and commercial maturity is very high. This success would not have been possible without understanding radio- wave propagation. This knowledge enables us to design successful systems and networks, together with waveforms, antennal and transceiver architectures. The radio channel is the cornerstone to the operation of any wireless system.

Today, our everyday life is almost impossible to detach from the influence of wireless mobile communication technologies. LTE-Advanced becomes a truly global standard for 4G cellular communications. Relay, as one of the key technologies of LTE-Advanced, can significantly extend the coverage, and improve the system throughput. LTE-A standards and tech- nologies were described in several recent books where the limited pages for relay feature prevent the detailed explanations of the technology. In this book, we tried to provide an in-depth description of LTE-A relay DEVELOPMENT. More specifically, significant portions are spent on relay channel modeling and potential technologies during the study item phase of the DEVELOPMENT, although some of those tech- nologies, such as Type 2 cooperative relay, multi-hop relay, relay with backhaul of carrier aggregation, were not standardized in Release 10 LTE.

The insinuation of telecommunications into the daily fabric of our lives has been arguably the most important and surprising DEVELOPMENT of the last 25 years. Before this revolution, telephone service and its place in our lives had been largely stable for more than a generation. The growth was, so to speak, lateral, as the global reach of telecommunications extended and more people got telephone service. The distinction between oversea and domestic calls blurred with the advances in switching and transmission, undersea cable, and communication satellites. Traffic on the network remained overwhelmingly voice, largely in analog format with facsimile (Fax) beginning to make inroads.
