CoMMUnication

  • Silicon-Based+RF+Front-Ends

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology enables high data-rate short-range communica- tion, in excess of hundredmegabit-per-secondsand up to multi-gigabit-per-seconds, over a wide spectrum of frequencies, while keeping power consumption at low lev- els. This low power operation results in a less-interfering co-existence with other existed CoMMUnication technologies (e.g., UNII bands). In addition to carrying a huge amount of data over a distance of up to 230 feet at very low power (less than 0.5mW), the UWB signal has the ability to penetrate through the doors and other obstacles that tend to reflect signals at more limited bandwidths and higher power densities.

  • Software+Radio

Software Radio (SR) is one of the most important emerging technologies for the future of wireless CoMMUnication services. By moving radio functionality into software, it promises to give flexible radio systems that are multi-service, multi- standard, multi-band, reconfigurable and reprogrammable by software. Today’s radios are matched to a particular class of signals that are well defined bytheircarrierfrequencies, modulationformatsandbandwidths.Aradiotransmitter today can only up convert signals with well-defined bandwidths over defined center frequencies, while, on the other side of the CoMMUnication chain, a radio receiver can only down convert well-defined signal bandwidths, transmitted over specified carrier frequencies.

  • Spectrum+Access+and+Management

The radio spectrum is one of the most precious resources which must be managed to ensure efficient access for the wireless CoMMUnication services which use it. The allocation and management of spectrum are administered by the regulatory authorities. Traditionally, spectrum allocation is carried out exclusively of its use in large geographic areas and assigning frequency bands to specific users or service providers is proved to be inefficient. Recently, substantial knowledge about dynamic spectrum access scheme has been accumulated to enable efficient spectrum sharing.

  • Spectrum+Sharing+Between+Radars

Radio frequency spectrum is a scarce and critical natural resource that is utilized for many services including surveillance, navigation, CoMMUnication, and broadcast- ing. Recent years have seen tremendous growth in the use of spectrum especially by commercial cellular operators. Ubiquitous use of smartphones and tablets is one of the reasons behind an all-time high utilization of spectrum. As a result, cellular operators are experiencing a shortage of radio spectrum to meet bandwidth demands of users. On the other hand, spectrum measurements have shown that much spectrum not held by cellular operators is underutilized even in dense urban areas. This has motivated shared access to spectrum by secondary systems with no or minimal impact on incumbent systems. Spectrum sharing is a promising approach to solve the problem of spectrum congestion as it allows cellular operators access to more spectrum in order to satisfy the ever-growing bandwidth demands of commercial users.

  • Stochastic Geometry and Wireless Networks

A wireless CoMMUnication network can be viewed as a collection of nodes, located in some domain, which can in turn be transmitters or receivers (depending on the network considered, nodes may be mobile users, base stations in a cellular network, access points of a WiFi mesh etc.). At a given time, several nodes transmit simultaneously, each toward its own receiver. Each transmitter–receiver pair requires its own wireless link. The signal received from the link transmitter may be jammed by the signals received from the other transmitters. Even in the simplest model where the signal power radiated from a point decays in an isotropic way with Euclidean distance, the geometry of the locations of the nodes plays a key role since it determines the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) at each receiver and hence the possibility of establishing simultaneously this collection of links at a given bit rate. The interference seen by a receiver is the sum of the signal powers received from all transmitters, except its own transmitter.

  • TeleCoMMUnication+Circuit+Design+2nd

The first edition of this book was published in 1992. Nine years later it had become clear that a second edition was required because of the rapidly changing nature of teleCoMMUnication. In 1992, the Internet was in existence but it was not the household word that it is in the year 2001. Cellular telephones were also in use but they had not yet achieved the popularity that they enjoy today. In the current edition, Chapter 1 has been revised to include a section on the Internet. Chapter 10 is new and it covers the facsimile machine; I had overlooked this important tele- CoMMUnication device in the first edition. Chapter 11 is also new and it describes the pager, the cordless telephone and the cellular telephone system. These are examples of a growing trend in teleCoMMUnications to go ‘‘wireless’’.

  • The Mobile Multimedia Business

The first practical examples of mobile CoMMUnications were used in many countries like the USA, the UK and Germany in military services, and played a significant role in the First World War to transfer important information from the front to headquarters to take further actions. Good and secure wireless CoMMUnications were an important need for all military services – army, navy and air force. In this respect, the Second World War was a big experimental battlefield for the development and evolution of mobile radio. It was in the interests of governments that after the Second World War the military investment should be paid back by civilian use, and all western European countries started their so-called first generation of mobile CoMMUnication networks.

  • Theory+and+Applications+of+OFDM+and+CDMA

Wireless CoMMUnication has become increasingly important not only for professional appli- cations but also for many fields in our daily routine and in consumer electronics. In 1990, a mobile telephone was still quite expensive, whereas today most teenagers have one, and they use it not only for calls but also for data transmission. More and more computers use wireless local area networks (WLANs), and audio and television broadcasting has become digital.

  • Transceiver and System Design

T his book covers basic CoMMUnications theory and practical imple- mentation of transmitters and receivers. In so doing, I focus on dig- ital modulation, demodulation methods, probabilities, detection of digital signals, and spread spectrum system design and analysis. This book was written for those who want a good understanding of the basic prin- ciples of digital wireless CoMMUnication systems, including spread spec- trum techniques. This book also provides a good intuitive and practical approach to digital CoMMUnications. Therefore it is a valuable resource for anyoneinvolvedinwirelessCoMMUnicationsandtransceiverdesignfordig- ital CoMMUnications. The reader will gain a broad understanding of basic CoMMUnication principles for transceiver design, digital CoMMUnications, and spread spectrum, along with examples of many types of commercial and military data link systems.

  • Transmission Techniques for 4G Systems

Fourth Generation (4G) wireless CoMMUnication systems aim to allow peak data rates in the range of 1 Gbps for nomadic access and 100 Mbps for vehicular mobil- ity. 4G aims to support current and emergent multimedia services, such as mobile TV, social networks and gaming, high-definition television and video telecon- ference, multimedia messaging service, using the All-over IP concept and with improved quality of service.
