  • R for beginners

The goal of the present document is to give a starting point for people newly interested in R. I chose to emphasize on the understanding of how R works, with the aim of a beginner, rather than expert use.

  • Cooperating+Embedded+Systems

This chapter introduces concepts on cooperating objects and wireless sensor net- works that will be used in the following chapters. It also introduces the Embedded WiSeNts Coordination Action. Finally, it presents an overview of the book and the relations between the following chapters.

  • Multimedia Over IP

In case you haven’t noticed, multimedia communication over IP and wireless net- works is exploding. Applications such as BitTorrent, used primarily for video downloads, now take up the lion’s share of all traffic on the Internet. Music file sharing, once on the legal cutting edge of massive copyright infringement on col- lege campuses around the world, has moved into the mainstream with signifi- cant legal downloads of music and video to devices such as the iPod and nu- merous other portable media players.

  • Physical Layer Security in Wireless Communications

The ever-increasing demand for private and sensitive data transmission over wireless net- works has made security a crucial concern in the current and future large-scale, dynamic, and heterogeneous wireless communication systems. To address this challenge, computer scientists and engineers have tried hard to continuously come up with improved crypto- graphic algorithms. But typically we do not need to wait too long to find an efficient way to crack these algorithms. With the rapid progress of computational devices, the current cryptographic methods are already becoming more unreliable. In recent years, wireless re- searchers have sought a new security paradigm termed physical layer security. Unlike the traditional cryptographic approach which ignores the effect of the wireless medium, physi- cal layer security exploits the important characteristics of wireless channel, such as fading, interference, and noise, for improving the communication security against eavesdropping attacks. This new security paradigm is expected to complement and significantly increase the overall communication security of future wireless networks.

  • Wireless Communications 2nd Edition

n the first part of this book, we give an introduction to the basic applications of wireless com- munications, as well as the technical problems inherent in this communication paradigm. After a brief history of wireless, Chapter 1 describes the different types of wireless services, and works out their fundamental differences. The subsequent Section 1.3 looks at the same problem from a different angle: what data rates, ranges, etc., occur in practical systems, and especially, what combination of performance measures are demanded (e.g., what data rates need to be transmitted over short distances; what data rates are required over long distances?) Chapter 2 then describes the technical challenges of communicating without wires, putting special emphasis on fading and co-channel interference. Chapter 3 describes the most elementary problem of designing a wireless system, namely to set up a link budget in either a noise-limited or an interference-limited system. After studying this part of the book, the reader should have an overview of different types of wireless services, and understand the technical challenges involved in each of them. The solutions to those challenges are described in the later parts of this book.

  • Wireless Optical Communication Systems

The use of optical free-space emissions to provide indoor wireless commu- nications has been studied extensively since the pioneering work of Gfeller and Bapst in 1979 [1]. These studies have been invariably interdisciplinary in- volving such far flung areas such as optics design‚ indoor propagation studies‚ electronics design‚ communications systems design among others. The focus of this text is on the design of communications systems for indoor wireless optical channels. Signalling techniques developed for wired fibre optic net- works are seldom efficient since they do not consider the bandwidth restricted nature of the wireless optical channel.

  • Metaheuristics+for+Intelligent+Electrical+Networks

This book is the result of works dedicated to specific applications of metaheuristics in smart electrical grids. From electric transmission, distribution networks to electric microgrids, the notion of intelligence refers to the ability to propose acceptable solutions in an increasingly more restrictive environment. Most often, it refers to decision-making assisting tools designed to support all human action.

  • RFID+Essentials

LIKE SO MANY OTHERS , THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN BECAUSE WE COULDN ’ T FIND ONE LIKE IT . We needed something to hand to all of those people who have come to us asking for “a good book to read on RFID.” When we looked for candidates we found some great books, but most were aimed at electrical engineers or top-level managers, with very little for those of us who are in between. This book is for developers, system and software architects, and project managers, as well as students and professionals in all of the industries impacted by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) who want to understand how this technology works. As the title suggests, this book is about RFID in general and not just the most recent developments; however, because so much is going on in the area of RFID for the supply chain and especially the Electronic Product Code (EPC), we have devoted consider- able space to these topics. Regardless of the type of RFID work you may be doing, we think you will find something useful here.

  • Field_Geophysics

The purpose of this book is to help anyone involved in small-scale geophys- ical surveys. It is not a textbook in the traditional sense, in that it is designed for use in the field and concerns itself with practical matters – with the- ory taking second place. Where theory determines field practice, it is stated, not developed or justified. For example, no attempt is made to explain why four-electrode resistivity works where two-electrode surveys do not.

  • Fundamentals_of_Global_Positioning_System3

If one examines the current literature on GPS receiver design, most of it is quite a bit above the level of the novice. It is taken for granted that the reader is already at a fairly high level of understanding and proceeds from there. This text will be an attempt to take the reader through the concepts and circuits needed to be able to understand how a GPS receiver works from the antenna to the solution of user position.
