Hibernate: A Developer s Notebook shows you how to use Hibernate to automate persistence: you write natural Java objects and some simple configuration files, and Hibernate automates all the interaction between your objects and the database. You don t even need to know the database is there, and you can change from one database to another simply by changing a few statements in a configuration file. If you ve needed to add a database backend to your application, don t put it off. It s much more fun than it used to be, and Hibernate: A Developer s Notebook shows you why.

The Fortran 90 Handbook is a definitive and comprehensive guide to Fortran 90 and its use. Fortran 90, the latest standard version of Fortran, has many excellent new features that will assist the programmer in writing efficient, portable, and maintainable programs. The Fortran 90 Handbook is an informal description of Fortran 90, developed to provide not only a readable explanation of features, but also some rationale for the inclusion of features and their use. In addition, “models” give the reader better insight as to why things are done as they are in the language.

It’s your first day in the lab.Undoubtedly you are experiencing a range of emotions: excitement, curiosity, anxiety. You will be working in this lab and with a group of people, as well as with your supervisor, for several years to come. This is the first day of a long commitment and, for some, a hard road ahead. Which is why it’s important to get off on the right foot.

If you are a C++ programmer who desires a fuller understanding of what is going on "under the hood," then Inside the C++ Object Model is for you! Inside the C++ Object Model focuses on the underlying mechanisms that support object-oriented programming within C++: constructor semantics, temporary generation, support for encapsulation, inheritance, and "the virtuals"-virtual functions and virtual inheritance. This book shows how your understanding the underlying implementation models can help you code more efficiently and with greater confidence. Lippman dispells the misinformation and myths about the overhead and complexity associated with C++, while pointing out areas in which costs and trade offs, sometimes hidden, do exist. He then explains how the various implementation models arose, points out areas in which they are likely to evolve, and why they are what they are. He covers the semantic implications of the C++ object model and how that model affects your programs.

A decade ago, I first wrote that people moved, and networks needed to adapt to the reality that people worked on the go. Of course, in those days, wireless LANs came with a trade-off. Yes, you could use them while moving, but you had to trade a great deal of throughput to get the mobility. Although it was possible to get bits anywhere, even while in motion, those bits came slower. As one of the network engineers I worked with put it, “We’ve installed switched gigabit Ethernet everywhere on campus, so I don’t understand why you’d want to go back to what is a 25-megabit hub.” He un- derestimated the allure of working on the go.

The genesis for this book was my involvement with the development of the SystemView (now SystemVue) simulation program at Elanix, Inc. Over several years of development, technical support, and seminars, several issues kept recur- ring. One common question was, “How do you simulate (such and such)?” The sec- ond set of issues was based on modern communication systems, and why particular developers did what they did. This book is an attempt to gather these issues into a single comprehensive source.

Someone who wants to get to know the customs of a country frequently receives the advice to learn the language of that country. why? Because the dif- ferences that distinguish the people of one country from those of another are reflected in the language. For example, the people of the islands of the Pacific do not have a term for war in their language. Similarly, some native tribes in the rain forests of the Amazon use up to 100 different terms for the color green.

The first question most readers of an O’Reilly book might ask is about the choice of the cover animal. In this case, “why a duck?” Well, for the record, our first choice was a unicorn decked out in glitter and a rainbow sash. That response always gets a laugh (we are sure you just giggled a little), but it also brings to the surface a common perception of software-defined networks among many expe‐ rienced network professionals. Although we think there is some truth to this perception, there is certainly more meat than myth to this unicorn.

Failure analysis is invaluable in the learning process of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical overstress (EOS) protection design and development [1–8]. In the failure analysis of EOS, ESD, and latchup events, there are a number of unique failure analysis processes andinformationthatcanprovidesignificantunderstandingandillumination[4].Today,thereis still no design methodology or computer-aided design (CAD) tool which will predict EOS, ESDprotectionlevels, andlatchupinasemiconductorchip;thisisoneofthesignificantreasons why failure analysis is critical to the ESD design discipline.
