Software-defined radios (SDRs) have been around for more than a decade. The first complete Global Positioning System (GPS) implementation was described by Dennis Akos in 1997. Since then several research groups have presented their contributions. We therefore find it timely to publish an up-to-date text on the subject and at the same time include Galileo, the forthcoming European satellitebased navigation system. Both GPS and Galileo belong to the category of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)

  • High-Altitude+Platforms

This book was conceived in such a special way. From our experience, and despite the increasing interest that we perceived amongst the research community in HAPS, there was not any book in the market entirely devoted to HAPS. We could only find some satellite communications books including only fragments related to HAPS, covering the ‘generalities’. A need for a reference book which could highlight state- of-the-art HAPS-related topics was therefore envisaged. Moreover, most of the information related to HAPS could only be found in technical reports, official recommendations, conference proceedings and journal papers.

  • Principles of Spread Spectrum

The goal of this book is to provide a concise but lucid explanation and deriva- tion of the fundamentals of spread-spectrum communication systems. Although spread-spectrum communication is a staple topic in textbooks on digital com- munication, its treatment is usually cursory, and the subject warrants a more intensive exposition. Originally adopted in military networks as a means of ensuring secure communication when confronted with the threats of jamming and interception, spread-spectrum systems are now the core of commercial ap- plications such as mobile cellular and satellite communication.

  • MEMS and Nanotechnology-Based Sensors

Recent advancements in nanotechnology (NT) materials and growth of micro/ nanotechnology have opened the door for potential applications of microelectro- mechanical systems (MEMS)- and NT-based sensors and devices. Such sensors and devices are best suited for communications, medical diagnosis, commercial, military, aerospace, and satellite applications. This book comes at a time when the future and well-being of Western industrial nations in the twenty-first century’s global eco- nomy increasingly depend on the quality and depth of the technological innovations they can commercialize at a rapid pace.

  • ForDummies_RFID_For_Dummies

With all the recent hype over radio frequency identification (RFID) and the requirements to implement it, you might think that RFID can turn water into wine, transform lead into gold, and cure the world’s diseases. You might also be worried that RFID will enable Big Brother to track your move- ments to within a foot of your location from a satellite five hundred miles up in space. The truth is, RFID can do none of these things. In this chapter, you find out the basics of what RFID is, what forces are dri- ving RFID as a replacement for the bar code in the marketplace, and what benefits RFID can offer

  • GNSS+Receivers+for+Weak+Signals

Many applications have required the positioning accuracy of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Some applications exist in environments that attenuate GNSS signals, and, consequently, the received GNSS signals become very weak. Examplesofsuchapplicationsarewirelessdevicepositioning, positioninginsensor networks that detect natural disasters, and orbit determination of geostationary and high earth orbit (HEO) satellites. Conventional GNSS receivers are not designed to work with weak signals. This book presents novel GNSS receiver algorithms that are designed to work with very weak signals.
