DIGITAL IMAGERY is pervasive in our world today. Consequently, standards for the efficient representation and interchange of digital images are essential. To date, some of the most successful still image compression standards have resulted from the ongoing work of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG). This group operates under the auspices of Joint Technical Committee 1, Subcommittee 29, Working Group 1 (JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1), a collaborative effort between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Telecommunication Union Standardization Sector (ITUT). Both the JPEG [1–3] and JPEG-LS [4–6] standards were born from the work of the JPEG committee. For the last few years, the JPEG committee has been working towards the establishment of a new standard known as JPEG 2000 (i.e., ISO/IEC 15444). The fruits of these labors are now coming to bear, as JPEG-2000 Part 1 (i.e., ISO/IEC 15444-1 [7]) has recently been approved as a new international standard.

The need for accurate monitoring and analysis of sequential data arises in many scientic, industrial and nancial problems. Although the Kalman lter is effective in the linear-Gaussian case, new methods of dealing with sequential data are required with non-standard models. recently, there has been renewed interest in simulation-based techniques. The basic idea behind these techniques is that the current state of knowledge is encapsulated in a representative sample from the appropriate posterior distribution. As time goes on, the sample evolves and adapts recursively in accordance with newly acquired data. We give a critical review of recent developments, by reference to oil well monitoring, ion channel monitoring and tracking problems, and propose some alternative algorithms that avoid the weaknesses of the current methods.

In this demo, I use the EM algorithm with a Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother and an M step, which I ve recently derived, to train a two-layer perceptron, so as to classify medical data (kindly provided by Steve Roberts and Will Penny from EE, Imperial College). The data and simulations are described in: Nando de Freitas, Mahesan Niranjan and Andrew Gee Nonlinear State Space Estimation with Neural Networks and the EM algorithm After downloading the file, type "tar -xf EMdemo.tar" to uncompress it. This creates the directory EMdemo containing the required m files. Go to this directory, load matlab5 and type "EMtremor". The figures will then show you the simulation results, including ROC curves, likelihood plots, decision boundaries with error bars, etc. WARNING: Do make sure that you monitor the log-likelihood and check that it is increasing. Due to numerical errors, it might show glitches for some data sets.

The paper describes the concept and realization of the DOOCS control software for FPGAbased TESLA cavity controller and simulator (SIMCON). It bases on universal software components, created for laboratory purposes and used in MATLAB based control environment. These modules have been recently adapted to the DOOCS environment to ensure a unified software to hardware communication model. The presented solution can be also used as a general platform for control algorithms development. The proposed interfaces between MATLAB and DOOCS modules allow to check the developed algorithm in the operation environment before implementation in the FPGA. As the examples two systems have been presented.
