Computing and the way people use C for doing it keeps changing as years go by. So overwhelming has been the response to all the previous editions of “Let Us C” that I have now decided that each year I would come up with a new edition of it so that I can keep the readers abreast with the way C is being used at that point in time.

This book has existed (in one form or another) since the first edition of C# and the .NET Platform was published in conjunction with the release of .NET 1.0 Beta 2, circa the summer of 2001. Since that point, I have been extremely happy and grateful to see that this text was very well received by the press and, most important, by readers. Over the years it was nominated as a Jolt Award finalist (I lost . . . crap!) and for the 2003 Referenceware Excellence Award in the programming book category

The twenty-one chapters of text have been prepared for high-school graduates who understand algebra, logarithms, and the basic principles of electricity such as Ohm’s law. This book is intended for RF planners, to serve as a practical tool in their daily work designing indoor radio distribution systems. Based on feedback from readers of the first edition it was clear to me that I needed to add more material and in depth description of the basics of indoor systems based on using repeaters; this has grown into a new Section 4.7. There was also a strong demand to add more detail and dedicate a full chapter to radio planning in tunnels, for both rail and road tunnels; and redundancy principles in the design focus for solving the challenge of handover zones. An entire Chapter 11 is now dedicated to tunnel radio planning.

The first question most readers of an O’Reilly book might ask is about the choice of the cover animal. In this case, “why a duck?” Well, for the record, our first choice was a unicorn decked out in glitter and a rainbow sash. That response always gets a laugh (we are sure you just giggled a little), but it also brings to the surface a common perception of software-defined networks among many expe‐ rienced network professionals. Although we think there is some truth to this perception, there is certainly more meat than myth to this unicorn.

Until the mid-1990s most readers would probably not have even come across the term soft- ware defined radio (SDR), let alone had an idea what it referred to. Since then SDR has made the transition from obscurity to mainstream, albeit still with many different understandings of the terms – software radio, software defined radio, software based radio, reconfigurable radio.
