Introduction ? ? The ARM Cortex -A8 microprocessor is the first applications microprocessor in ARM!ˉs new Cortex family. With high performance and power efficiency, it targets a wide variety of mobile and consumer applications including mobile phones, set-top boxes, gaming consoles and automotive navigation/entertainment systems. The Cortex-A8 processor spans a range of performance points depending on the implementation, delivering over to 2000 Dhrystone MIPS (DMIPS) of performance for demanding consumer applications and consuming less than 300mW for low-power mobile devices. This translates into a large increase in processing capability while staying with the power levels of previous generations of mobile devices. Consumer applications will benefit from the reduced heat dissipation and resulting lower packaging and integration costs.

Over a dozen commercially significant arithmetics boasted diverse wordsizes, precisions, rounding procedures and over/underflow behaviors, and more were in the works. “Portable” software intended to reconcile that numerical diversity had become unbearably costly to develop. Thirteen years ago, when IEEE 754 became official, major microprocessor manufacturers had already adopted it despite the challenge it posed to implementors. With unprecedented altruism, hardware designers had risen to its challenge in the belief that they would ease and encourage a vast burgeoning of numerical software. They did succeed to a considerable extent. Anyway, rounding anomalies that preoccupied all of us in the 1970s afflict only CRAY X-MPs — J90s now.

The software and hardware development fields evolved along separate paths through the end of the 20th century. We seem to have come full circle, however. The previously rigid hardware on which our programs run is softening in many ways. Embedded systems are largely responsible for this softening. These hidden computing systems drive the electronic products around us, including consumer products like digital cameras and personal digital assistants, office automation equipment like copy machines and printers, medical devices like heart monitors and ventilators, and automotive electronics like cruise controls and antilock brakes. Embedded systems force designers to work under incredibly tight time-tomarket, power consumption, size, performance, flexibility, and cost constraints. Many technologies introduced over the past two decades have sought to help satisfy these constraints. To understand these technologies, it is important to first distinguish the underlying embedded systems elements.

David Vernon is the Coordinator of the European Network for the Advancement of Artificial Cognitive Systems and he is a Visiting Professor of Cognitive Systems at the University of Genoa. He is also a member of the management team of the RobotCub integrated working on the development of open-source cognitive humanoid robot. Over the past 27 years, he has held positions at Westinghouse Electric, Trinity College Dublin, the European Commission, the National University of Ireland Maynooth, Science Foundation Ireland, and Etisalat University College. He has authored two and edited three books on computer vision and has published over eighty papers in the fields of Computer Vision, Robotics, and Cognitive Systems. His research interests include Fourier-based computer vision and enactive approaches to cognition. Commercially available active noise control headphones rely on fixed analog controllers to drive "anti-noise" loudspeakers. Our design uses an adaptive controller to optimally cancel unwanted acoustic noise. This headphone would be particularly useful for workers who operate or work near heavy machinery and engines because the noise is selectively eliminated. Desired sounds, such as speech and warning signals, are left to be heard clearly. The adaptive control algorithm is implemented on a Texas Instruments (TI™ ) 1 TMS320C30GEL digital signal processor (DSP), which drives a Sony CD550 headphone/microphone system. Our experiments indicate that adaptive noise control results in a dramatic improvement in performance over fixed noise control. This improvement is due to the availability of high-performance programmable DSPs and the self-optimizing and tracking capabilities of the adaptive controller in response to the surrounding noise.
