These routines model tropospheric radiowave propagation over variable terrain and calculates propagation loss vs. height and range. Propagation loss is displayed in dB contours on a height vs. range plot. TPEM is based on the split-step Fourier PE method and was originally developed from an early PE model called PEPC, written by Fred Tappert. Propagation loss over variable terrain is modeled by shifting the field an appropriate number of bin widths correspondc ing to the height of the ground. The field is determined using the smooth earth PE method.

The Schumann resonance frequencies are a set of eigenmodes in the extremely low frequency (ELF) portion of the electromagnetic field spectrum. These frequencies are only present for planetary-like bodies with a substantial ionosphere acting as a perfect electric conductor, thus forming a resonance cavity with the surface. Wireless means different things to different people. For this book, it refers to the radio systems that provide point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and earth-space communications over transmission links that propagate outside buildings through the lower atmosphere. Wireless systems are being built that provide data transmission between computers and other devices on one’s own desk. These are part of the wireless world but not the part where, except for interference perhaps, the atmosphere has any influence. The intent of this book is to provide a description of the physical phenomena that can affect propagation through the atmosphere, present sample measurements and statistics, and provide models that system designers can use to calculate their link budgets and estimate the limitations the atmosphere may place on their design.
