DIGITAL IMAGERY is pervasive in our world today. Consequently, standards for the efficient representation and interchange of digital images are essential. To date, some of the most successful still image compression standards have resulted from the ongoing work of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG). This group operates under the auspices of Joint Technical Committee 1, Subcommittee 29, Working Group 1 (JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1), a collaborative effort between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Telecommunication Union Standardization Sector (ITUT). Both the JPEG [1–3] and JPEG-LS [4–6] standards were born from the work of the JPEG committee. For the last few years, the JPEG committee has been working towards the establishment of a new standard known as JPEG 2000 (i.e., ISO/IEC 15444). The fruits of these labors are now coming to bear, as JPEG-2000 Part 1 (i.e., ISO/IEC 15444-1 [7]) has recently been approved as a new international standard.

The Little Green BATS is the first and so far only Dutch team in the 3D simulation league. We are a group of graduate students from the department of AI at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Our team name is derived from the fact that the first 3D agents in the league were balls and from the very philosophical observation that Balls Are Truly Spheres (BATS). This abbreviation reminded us of our favorite song Little Green Bag by The George Baker Selection and so the whole team name was born. We entered the competition for the first time at the 10th edition of RoboCup at Bremen, Germany. unfortunately our hard work didn t pay off that time: already in the second round we got eliminated. However, after this we had a good base to build upon and the good time we had at the event and the nice community inspired us to continue and work hard for another year. This turned out to be defiantly worth it, because in 2007 in Atlanta we managed to become vice world champions!

This book was born from the perception that there is much more to spectrum use and sharing than one sees reflected in publications, whether academic, commercial or political. the former – in good research style – tend towards reductionism and concentrate on specific, detailed aspects. commercial publications tend to empha- size the positive aspects and they tend to put promise above practice. Given the ever increasing pace of technology development and recent successes of new wireless technologies, some pundits predict large-scale spectrum scarcity, potentially lead- ing to economic catastrophe. Although economic theory has a hard time explaining recent events that shook the world economy, the notion of spectrum scarcity is intui- tively acceptable, even if not correct or immediately relevant.

The idea for this book was born during one of my project-related trips to the beautiful city of Hangzhou in China, where in the role of Chief Architect I had to guide a team of very young, very smart and extremely dedicated software developers and verification engineers. Soon it became clear that as eager as the team was to jump into the coding, it did not have any experience in system architecture and design and if I did not want to spend all my time in constant travel between San Francisco and Hangzhou, the only option was to groom a number of local junior architects. Logically, one of the first questions being asked by these carefully selected future architects was whether I could recommend a book or other learning material that could speed up the learning cycle. I could not. Of course, there were many books on various related topics, but many of them were too old and most of the updated information was either somewhere on the Internet dispersed between many sites and online magazines, or buried in my brain along with many years of experience of system architecture.

Digital radios have undergone an astonishing evolution in the last century. born as a set of simple and power-hungry electrical and electromechanical devices for low data rate transmission of telegraph data in the Marconi age, they have transformed, thanks to substantial advances in electronic technology, into a set of small, reliable and sophisticated integrated devices supporting broadband multimedia communications. This, however, would not have been possible unless significant progress had been made in recent decades in the field of signal processing algorithms for baseband and passband signals. In fact, the core of any modern digital radio consists of a set of algorithms running over programmable electronic hardware. This book stems from the research and teaching activities of its co-authors in the field of algorithmic techniques for wireless communications. A huge body of technical literature has accumulated in the last four decades in this area, and an extensive coverage of all its important aspects in a single textbook is impossible. For this reason, we have selected a few important topics and, for ease of reading, organized them into two parts.
