Wireless technologies like GSM, UMTS, LTE, Wireless LAN and Bluetooth have revolu- tionized the way we communicate and exchange data by making services like telephony and Internet access available anytime and from almost anywhere. Today, a great variety of techni- cal publications offer background information about these technologies but they all fall short in one way or another. books covering these technologies usually describe only one of the systems in detail and are generally too complex as a first introduction. The Internet is also a good source, but the articles one finds are usually too short and superficial or only deal with a specific mechanism of one of the systems. For this reason, it was difficult for me to recom- mend a single publication to students in my telecommunication classes, which I have been teaching in addition to my work in the wireless telecommunication industry. This book aims to change this.

This book was conceived in such a special way. From our experience, and despite the increasing interest that we perceived amongst the research community in HAPS, there was not any book in the market entirely devoted to HAPS. We could only find some satellite communications books including only fragments related to HAPS, covering the ‘generalities’. A need for a reference book which could highlight state- of-the-art HAPS-related topics was therefore envisaged. Moreover, most of the information related to HAPS could only be found in technical reports, official recommendations, conference proceedings and journal papers.

LTE-Advanced becomes a truly global standard for 4G cellular communications. Relay, as one of the key technologies of LTE-Advanced, can significantly extend the coverage, and improve the system throughput. LTE-A standards and tech- nologies were described in several recent books where the limited pages for relay feature prevent the detailed explanations of the technology. In this book, we tried to provide an in-depth description of LTE-A relay development. More specifically, significant portions are spent on relay channel modeling and potential technologies during the study item phase of the development, although some of those tech- nologies, such as Type 2 cooperative relay, multi-hop relay, relay with backhaul of carrier aggregation, were not standardized in Release 10 LTE.

This books presents the research work of COST 273 Towards Mobile Broadband Multimedia Networks, hence, it reports on the work performed and on the results achieved within the project by its participants. The material presented here corresponds to the results obtained in four years of collaborative work by more than 350 researchers from 137 institutions (universities, operators, manufacturers, regulators, independent laboratories and others – a full list is provided in Appendix B) belonging to 29 countries (mainly European, but also from Asia and North America) in the area of mobileradio. Theobjectiveofpublishingtheseresultsasabookisessentiallytomakethemavailable to an audience wider than the project. In fact, it just follows a ‘tradition’ of previous COST Actions in this area of telecommunications, i.e. COST 207, 231 and 259.

One of the very first books published on the social impact of the mobile phone was Timo Kopomaa’s The City in Your Pocket: Birth of the Mobile Information Society. The book, published in 2000, was based on research that Kopomaa had under- taken for Nokia and Sonera as part of his doctoral studies in the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies at the Helsinki University of Technology. The first line he writes in the book is peculiar: ‘Mobile communication is not a serious matter’. By this, we assume he is referring to a view of the world that would regard the mobile phone as little more than an unremarkable fact of everyday life – a simple play- thing for the young, or a productivity tool for the business executive and busy parent.

Radio propagation measurements and channel modelling continue to be of fundamental importance to radio system design. As new technology enables dynamic spectrum access and higher data rates, radio propagation effects such as shadowing, the presence of multipath and frequency dispersion are the limiting factors in the design of wireless communication systems. While there are several books covering the topic of radio propagation in various frequency bands, there appears to be no books on radio propagation measurements, which this book addresses at length.
