This book is an entry-level text on the technology of telecommunications. It has been crafted with the newcomer in mind. The twenty-one chapters of text have been prepared for high-school graduates who understand algebra, logarithms, and the basic principles of electricity such as Ohm’s law. However, it is appreciated that many readers require support in these areas. Appendices A and B review the essentials of electricity and mathematics up through logarithms. This material was placed in the appendices so as not to distract from the main theme, the technology of telecommunication systems. Another topic that many in the industry find difficult is the use of decibels and derived units. Appendix C provides the reader a basic understanding of decibels and their applications. The only mathematics necessary is an understanding of the powers of ten

Fordecades,microwavelineofsight(LOS)linkshavebeenoneofthebasictechnolo- gies used to build telephone networks. Until 1980, the fast rollout of high capacity transport networks and deployment of links in areas with challenging geographic characteristics could not be understood without this technology.

In recent years, the research and developments in the area of RF and microwave technologies have progressed significantly due to the growing demand for applica- bility in wireless communication technologies. Starting from 1992, wireless com- munication technologies have become quite mature. In the modern era of electronic developments, design of wireless handsets is an example of integration of many di- verse skill sets. Classical books in the areas of microwave technology provide us with an in-depth knowledge of electromagnetic fundamentals.

This book is about multipoint cooperative communication, a key technology to overcome the long-standing problem of limited transmission rate caused by inter- point interference. However, the multipoint cooperative communication is not an isolated technology. Instead, it covers a vast range of research areas such as the multiple-input multiple-outputsystem, the relay network, channel state information issues, inter-point radio resource management operations, coordinated or joint transmissions, etc. We suppose that any attempt trying to thoroughly analyze the multipoint cooperative communication technology might end up working on a cyclopedia for modern communication systems and easily get lost in discussing all kinds of cooperative communication schemes as well as the associated models and their variations.

Mobile wireless communications are in constant evolution due to the continu- ously increasing requirements and expectations of both users and operators. Mass multimedia* services have been for a long time expected to generate a large amount of data traffic in future wireless networks [1]. Mass multimedia services are, by definition, purposed for many people. In general, it can be distinguished between the distribution of any popular content over a wide area and the distribu- tion of location-dependent information in highly populated areas. Representative examples include the delivery of live video streaming content (like sports compe- titions, concerts, or news) and file download (multimedia clips, digital newspa- pers, or software updates).

The purpose of this book is to introduce the concept of the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radio channel, which is an intelligent communication method based upon using multiple antennas. The book opens by explaining MIMO in layman’s terms to help stu- dents and people in industry working in related areas become easily familiarised with the concept. Therefore the structure of the book will be carefully arranged to allow a user to progress steadily through the chapters and understand the fundamental and mathematical principles behind MIMO through the visual and explanatory way in which they will be written. It is the intention that several references will also be provided, leading to further reading in this highly researched technology.

The radio spectrum is one of the most precious resources which must be managed to ensure efficient access for the wireless communication services which use it. The allocation and management of spectrum are administered by the regulatory authorities. Traditionally, spectrum allocation is carried out exclusively of its use in large geographic areas and assigning frequency bands to specific users or service providers is proved to be inefficient. Recently, substantial knowledge about dynamic spectrum access scheme has been accumulated to enable efficient spectrum sharing.

Radio frequency spectrum is a scarce and critical natural resource that is utilized for many services including surveillance, navigation, communication, and broadcast- ing. Recent years have seen tremendous growth in the use of spectrum especially by commercial cellular operators. Ubiquitous use of smartphones and tablets is one of the reasons behind an all-time high utilization of spectrum. As a result, cellular operators are experiencing a shortage of radio spectrum to meet bandwidth demands of users. On the other hand, spectrum measurements have shown that much spectrum not held by cellular operators is underutilized even in dense urban areas. This has motivated shared access to spectrum by secondary systems with no or minimal impact on incumbent systems. Spectrum sharing is a promising approach to solve the problem of spectrum congestion as it allows cellular operators access to more spectrum in order to satisfy the ever-growing bandwidth demands of commercial users.
