  • Microwave+Mobile+Communications

Nature is seldom kind. One of the most appealing uses for radio- telephone systems—communication with people on the move—must over- come radio transmission problems so difficult they challenge the imagina- tion. A microwave radio signal transmitted between a fixed base station and a moving vehicle in a typical Urban environment exhibits extreme variations in both amplitude and apparent frequency.

  • Mobile+and+Wireless+Communications

One of the very first books published on the social impact of the mobile phone was Timo Kopomaa’s The City in Your Pocket: Birth of the Mobile Information Society. The book, published in 2000, was based on research that Kopomaa had under- taken for Nokia and Sonera as part of his doctoral studies in the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies at the Helsinki University of Technology. The first line he writes in the book is peculiar: ‘Mobile communication is not a serious matter’. By this, we assume he is referring to a view of the world that would regard the mobile phone as little more than an unremarkable fact of everyday life – a simple play- thing for the young, or a productivity tool for the business executive and busy parent.

  • Spectrum+Sharing+Between+Radars

Radio frequency spectrum is a scarce and critical natural resource that is utilized for many services including surveillance, navigation, communication, and broadcast- ing. Recent years have seen tremendous growth in the use of spectrum especially by commercial cellular operators. Ubiquitous use of smartphones and tablets is one of the reasons behind an all-time high utilization of spectrum. As a result, cellular operators are experiencing a shortage of radio spectrum to meet bandwidth demands of users. On the other hand, spectrum measurements have shown that much spectrum not held by cellular operators is underutilized even in dense Urban areas. This has motivated shared access to spectrum by secondary systems with no or minimal impact on incumbent systems. Spectrum sharing is a promising approach to solve the problem of spectrum congestion as it allows cellular operators access to more spectrum in order to satisfy the ever-growing bandwidth demands of commercial users.

  • Multiscale+Simulation+Approach

Battery systems for energy storage are among the most relevant technologies of the 21 st century. They – in particular modern lithium-ion batteries (LIB) – are enablers for the market success of electric vehicles (EV) as well as for stationary energy storage solutions for balancing fluctuations in electricity grids resulting from the integrationofrenewableenergysourceswithvolatilesupply 1 .BothEVandstationary storage solutions are important because they foster the transition from the usage of fossil energy carriers towards cleaner renewable energy sources. Furthermore, EV cause less local air pollution and noise emissions compared to conventional combustion engine vehicles resulting in better air quality especially in Urban areas. Unfortunately, to this day, various technological and economic challenges impede a broad application of batteries for EV as well as for large scale energy storage and load leveling in electricity grids.

  • Fundamentals_of_Global_Positioning_System2

In this new edition of the book, only minor changes were made to the original nine chapters but three new chapters treat topics of increasing interest to GPS users and equipment developers. One topic, improving the GPS receiver sensi- tivity may extend their operations into buildings, which is becoming important for emergency rescue and Urban warfare.
