  • Antennas and Propagation

This book has grown out of my teaching and research at the University of Surrey and out of my previous experiences in companies such as Philips, Ascom and Motorola. It is primarily intended for use by students in master’s level and enhanced final-year under- graduate courses who are specialising in communication systems and wish to understand the principles and current practices of the wireless communication channel, including both antenna and propagation aspects

  • Mobile Radio Channels

With this book at your fingertips, you, the reader, and I have something in common. We share the same interest in mobile radio channels. This area attracted my interest first in autumn 1992 whenImovedfromindustrytoacademiatofindachallengeinmylifeandtopursueascientific career. Since then, I consider myself as a student of the mobile radio channel who lives for modelling, analyzing, and simulating them. While the first edition of this book resulted from my teaching and research activities at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH), Germany, the present second edition is entirely an outcome of my work at the University of Agder, Norway.

  • Mobile+and+Wireless+Communications

One of the very first books published on the social impact of the mobile phone was Timo Kopomaa’s The City in Your Pocket: Birth of the Mobile Information Society. The book, published in 2000, was based on research that Kopomaa had under- taken for Nokia and Sonera as part of his doctoral studies in the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies at the Helsinki University of Technology. The first line he writes in the book is peculiar: ‘Mobile communication is not a serious matter’. By this, we assume he is referring to a view of the world that would regard the mobile phone as little more than an unremarkable fact of everyday life – a simple play- thing for the young, or a productivity tool for the business executive and busy parent.

  • RISK+COMMUNICATION

The fi rst edition of this book came about because Regina Lundgren had always been fascinated with communication. She started writing novels in the third grade. When she was asked on her fi rst day at the University of Washington what she hoped to do with her degree in scientifi c and technical communication, she replied, “I want to write environ- mental impact statements.” When Patricia Clark hired her to work at the Pacifi c Northwest National Laboratory to do just that, she was overjoyed.

  • Wireless Networking Technology

Although the origins of radio frequency based wireless networking can be traced back to the University of Hawaii’s ALOHANET research project in the 1970s, the key events that led to wireless networking becoming one of the fastest growing technologies of the early 21st century have been the ratification of the IEEE 802.11 standard in 1997, and the subsequent development of interoperability certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance (formerly WECA).

  • Inside+the+Smart+Home

In 2001, Orange, a UK mobile network operator, announced the “Orange at Home” project, a smart house incorporating the latest technology wizardry built some 20 miles north of London. It was intended to be more than a mere showcase, with plans for real families to move in and live with the smart home. My then research establishment, the Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey, was commissioned to study how these families reacted to their new home, and to report lessons for the future development of smart homes and smart home technologies.
