Smartphones have become a key element in providing greater user access to the mobile Internet. Many complex applications which used to be limited to PCs, have been developed and operated on smartphones. These applications extend the functionalities of smartphones, making them more convenient for USERS to be connected. However, they also greatly increase the power consumption of smartphones, making USERS frustrated with long delays in Web browsing.

Mobile wireless communications are in constant evolution due to the continu- ously increasing requirements and expectations of both USERS and operators. Mass multimedia* services have been for a long time expected to generate a large amount of data traffic in future wireless networks [1]. Mass multimedia services are, by definition, purposed for many people. In general, it can be distinguished between the distribution of any popular content over a wide area and the distribu- tion of location-dependent information in highly populated areas. Representative examples include the delivery of live video streaming content (like sports compe- titions, concerts, or news) and file download (multimedia clips, digital newspa- pers, or software updates).

Rapid growth of wireless communication services in recent decades has created a huge demand of radio spectrum. Spectrum scarcity and utilization inefficiency limit the development of wireless networks. Cognitive radio is a promising tech- nology that allows secondary USERS to reuse the underutilized licensed spectrum of primary USERS. The major challenge for spectrum sharing is to achieve high spectrum efficiency while making non-intrusive access to the licensed bands. This requires in- formation of availability and quality of channel resources at secondary transmitters, however, is difficult to be obtained perfectly in practice.

The roots of this book were planted about a decade ago. At that time, I became increasingly convinced that wide-area and metropolitan-area networks, where much of my group’s research has been centered at that time, were in good shape. Although research in these fields was (and still is) needed, that’s not where the networking bottleneck seemed to be. Rather, the bottleneck was (and still is in many places) in the access networks, which choked USERS’ access to information and services. It was clear to me that the long-term solution to that problem has to involve optical fiber access networks.

It was only a few years ago that “ubiquitous connectivity” was recognized as the future of wireless communication systems. In the era of ubiquitous connectivity, it was expected that the broadband mobile Internet experience would be pervasive, and seamless connectivity on a global scale would be no surprise at all. The quality of service would be guaranteed no matter when/where/what the USERS wanted with the connectivity. Connectivity would even be extended to object-to-object communication, where no human intervention was required. All objects would become capable of autonomous communication.

Wireless communications and networking technology are advancing at a very rapid pace. Newer technologies and standards are evolving to serve the ever-increasing num- ber of USERS demanding different types of mobile applications and services. Research and development activities on wireless technology constitute one of the most impor- tant segments of research and development in the telecommunications area today.

An understanding of the policies, regulations, standards and techniques of radio spectrum management is useful to those who manage and administrate it, to operators, to equipment providers and to the USERS of wireless communication (i.e., all of us). For many years the author has been deeply involved in ruling the RF spectrum at the national, regional and global levels. The book is based on the professional experience of the author, his academic courses, presenta- tions and tutorials in five continents. The book reflects this legacy and will be of use to engineers, lawyers and economists, who serve the global industry of the wireless world; in it they may find solutions to the problems they frequently encounter.

The following sections profile many of the vendors in the NFV market. The individual profiles were created through a collaborative effort between SDNCentral’s Research Team and the Vendor’s product experts. SDNCentral worked under the assumption the information provided by the vendors was factual, auditing the submissions only to remove unverifiable claims and hyperbole. Extended profiles can be viewed online. While every attempt has been made to validate the capabilities listed in the profiles, SDNCentral advises end USERS to verify the veracity of each claim for themselves in their actual deployment environments. SDNCentral cannot be held liable for unexpected operations, damages or incorrect operation due to any inaccuracies listed here. SDNCentral welcomes feedback and additional information from end USERS based on their real-world experiences with the products and technologies listed. The SDNCentral research team can be reached at

In this thesis several asp ects of space-time pro cessing and equalization for wire- less communications are treated. We discuss several di?erent metho ds of improv- ing estimates of space-time channels, such as temp oral parametrization, spatial parametrization, reduced rank channel estimation, b o otstrap channel estimation, and joint estimation of an FIR channel and an AR noise mo del. In wireless commu- nication the signal is often sub ject to intersymb ol interference as well as interfer- ence from other USERS.

The radio spectrum is one of the most precious resources which must be managed to ensure efficient access for the wireless communication services which use it. The allocation and management of spectrum are administered by the regulatory authorities. Traditionally, spectrum allocation is carried out exclusively of its use in large geographic areas and assigning frequency bands to specific USERS or service providers is proved to be inefficient. Recently, substantial knowledge about dynamic spectrum access scheme has been accumulated to enable efficient spectrum sharing.
