Abstract: The MAX9930–MAX9933 family of RF controllers and detector can be used in a wide variety of applications. Anideal application is cable Television (CATV) over fiber, where either a RF controller or a RF detector controls the gain of atransimpedance amplifier (TIA). This application note shows how the MAX9930 (RF controller) can be used as either theRF controller or detector.

A few short years ago, the applications for video were somewhat confined—analog was used for broadcast and cable Television, VCRs, set-top boxes, Televisions and camcorders. Since then, there has been a tremendous and rapid conversion to digital video, mostly based on the MPEG-2 video compression standard. Today, in addition to the legacy DV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 audio and video com- pression standards, there are three new high- performance video compression standards. These new video codecs offer much higher video compression for a given level of video quality.

The unguided transmission of information using electromagnetic waves at radio frequency (RF) is often referred to as wireless communications, the first demonstration of which took place at the end of the 19th cen- tury and is attributed to Hertz. The technology was, shortly thereafter, commercialised by, amongst others, Marconi in one of the first wire- less communication systems, i.e., wireless telegraphy. In the first half of the 20th century the technology was developed further to enable more than the mere transmission of Morse code. This first resulted in uni- directional radio broadcasting and several years later also in Television broadcasting.
