Mobile communication devices like smart phones or tablet PCs enable us to consume information at every location and at every time. The rapid development of new applications and new ServiCEs and the demand to access data in real time create an increasing throughput demand. The data have to be transmitted reliably to ensure the desired quality of ServiCE. Furthermore, an improved utilization of the bandwidth is desired to reduce the cost of transmission.

At the time of writing, and to an extent never seen before, there is an expectation that almost any information or ServiCE that is available through communication systems in the office or home will be available wherever the user happens to be. This is placing incredible demands on wireless communications and has been the driver for the gen- esis and deployment of three generations of cellular systems in the space of 20 years.

The General Packet Radio ServiCE (GPRS) allows an end user to send and receive data in packet transfer mode within a public land mobile network (PLMN) without using a permanent connection between the mobile station (MS) and the external network during data transfer. This way, GPRS opti- mizes the use of network and radio resources (RRs) since, unlike circuit- switched mode, no connection between the MS and the external network is established when there is no data flow in progress. Thus, this RR optimiza- tion makes it possible for the operator to offer more attractive fees.

With the rapid growth in the number of wireless applications, ServiCEs and devices, using a single wireless technology such as a second generation (2G) and third gener- ation (3G) wireless system would not be efficient to deliver high speed data rate and quality-of-ServiCE (QoS) support to mobile users in a seamless way. The next genera- tion wireless systems (also sometimes referred to as Fourth generation (4G) systems) are being devised with the vision of heterogeneity in which a mobile user/device will be able to connect to multiple wireless networks (e.g., WLAN, cellular, WMAN) simultaneously.

This book is intended to help electric power and telephone company personnel and individuals interested in properly protecting critical tele communications circuits and equipment located in high voltage (HV) environments and to improve ServiCE reliability while maintaining safe working conditions. Critical telecommunications circuits are often located in HV environments such as electric utility power plants, substations, cell sites on power towers, and standalone telecommuni cations facilities such as 911 call centers and mountaintop telecom munications sites.

The third generation (3G) mobile communication system is the next big thing in the world of mobile telecommunications. The first generation included analog mobile phones [e.g., Total Access Communications Systems (TACS), Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT), and Advanced Mobile Phone ServiCE (AMPS)], and the second generation (2G) included digital mobile phones [e.g., global system for mobile communications (GSM), personal digital cellular (PDC), and digital AMPS (D-AMPS)]. The 3G will bring digital multimedia handsets with high data transmission rates, capable of providing much more than basic voice calls.

This book addresses two aspects of network operation quality; namely, resource management and fault management. Network operation quality is among the functions to be fulfilled in order to offer quality of ServiCE, QoS, to the end user. It is characterized by four parameters: – packet loss; – delay; – jitter, or the variation of delay over time; – availability. Resource management employs mechanisms that enable the first three parameters to be guaranteed or optimized. Fault management aims to ensure continuity of ServiCE.

To meet the future demand for huge traffic volume of wireless data ServiCE, the research on the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems has been undertaken in recent years. It is expected that the spectral and energy efficiencies in 5G mobile communication systems should be ten-fold higher than the ones in the fourth generation (4G) mobile communication systems. Therefore, it is important to further exploit the potential of spatial multiplexing of multiple antennas. In the last twenty years, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna techniques have been considered as the key techniques to increase the capacity of wireless communication systems. When a large-scale antenna array (which is also called massive MIMO) is equipped in a base-station, or a large number of distributed antennas (which is also called large-scale distributed MIMO) are deployed, the spectral and energy efficiencies can be further improved by using spatial domain multiple access. This paper provides an overview of massive MIMO and large-scale distributed MIMO systems, including spectral efficiency analysis, channel state information (CSI) acquisition, wireless transmission technology, and resource allocation.
