The telecommunications industry is undoubtedly in a period of radical change with the advent of mobile broadband radio access and the rapid convergence of Internet and mobile services. Some of these changes have been enabled by a fundamental shift in the underlying technologies; mobile networks are now increasingly based on a pure Internet Protocol (IP) network architecture. Since the first edition of this book was published in 2009, a multitude of connected devices from eBook readers to smartphones and even Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technologies have all started to benefit from mobile broadband. The sea change over the last few years is only the beginning of a wave of new services that will fundamentally change our economy, our society, and even our environment. In that period, cel- lular telephony and consumer electronics have moved from the realm of science fiction to everyday reality. Much of that revolu- tion is unremarkable – we use wireless, in its broadest sense, for TV remote controls, car keyfobs, travel tickets and credit card transactions every day. At the same time, we have increased the number of mobile devices that we carry around with us. However, in many cases the design and function of these and other static products are still constrained by the wired connections that they use to transfer and share data.

The insinuation of telecommunications into the daily fabric of our lives has been arguably the most important and surprising development of the last 25 years. Before this Revolution, telephone service and its place in our lives had been largely stable for more than a generation. The growth was, so to speak, lateral, as the global reach of telecommunications extended and more people got telephone service. The distinction between oversea and domestic calls blurred with the advances in switching and transmission, undersea cable, and communication satellites. Traffic on the network remained overwhelmingly voice, largely in analog format with facsimile (Fax) beginning to make inroads.

The continuing explosive growth in mobile communication is demanding more spectrally efficient radio access technologies than the prevalent second generation (2G) systems such as GSM to handle just the voice traffic. We are already witnessing high levels of mobile penetration exceeding 70% in some countries. It is anticipated that by 2010 more than half of all communications will be carried out by mobile cellular networks. On the other hand, the information Revolution and changing life habits are bringing the requirement of commu- nicating on a multimedia level to the mobile environment. But the data handling capabilities and flexibility of the 2G cellular systems are limited.
