Smart Grids provide many benefits for society. Reliability, observability across the energy distribution system and the exchange of information between devices are just some of the features that make Smart Grids so attractive. One of the main products of a Smart Grid is to data. The amount of data available nowadays increases fast and carries several kinds of information. Smart metres allow engineers to perform multiple measurements and analyse such data. For example, information about consumption, power quality and digital protection, among others, can be extracted. However, the main challenge in extracting information from data arises from the data quality. In fact, many sectors of the society can benefit from such data. Hence, this information needs to be properly stored and readily available. In this chapter, we will address the main concepts involving Technology Information, Data Mining, Big Data and clustering for deploying information on Smart Grids.

In the hit CBS crime show Person of Interest, which debuted in 2011, the two heroes—one a former Central Intelligence Agency agent and the other a billionaire technology genius—work together using the ubiquitous surveillance system in New York City to try to stop violent crime. It’s referred to by some as a science fiction cop show. But the use of advanced technology for crime analysis in almost every major police department in the United States may surpass what’s depicted on TV crime dramas such as Person of Interest. Real-time crime cen- ters (RTCCs) are a vital aspect of intelligent policing. Crime analysis is no longer the stuff of science fiction. It’s real.

I saw the light of the future when I first read Ray Kurzweil’s best-seller book The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology. One cubic inch of nanotube cir- cuitry, once fully developed, would be up to one hundred million times more powerful than the human brain.

During the past years, there has been a quickly rising interest in radio access tech- nologies for providing mobile as well as nomadic and fixed services for voice, video, and data. The difference in design, implementation, and use between telecom and datacom technologies is also getting more blurred. One example is cellular technologies from the telecom world being used for broadband data and wireless LAN from the datacom world being used for voice over IP.

A decade ago, I first wrote that people moved, and networks needed to adapt to the reality that people worked on the go. Of course, in those days, wireless LANs came with a trade-off. Yes, you could use them while moving, but you had to trade a great deal of throughput to get the mobility. Although it was possible to get bits anywhere, even while in motion, those bits came slower. As one of the network engineers I worked with put it, “We’ve installed switched gigabit Ethernet everywhere on campus, so I don’t understand why you’d want to go back to what is a 25-megabit hub.” He un- derestimated the allure of working on the go.

One traditional view of how wireless networks evolve is of a continuous, inevitable progres- sion to higher link speeds, combined with greater mobility over wider areas. This standpoint certainly captures the development from first and second generation cellular systems focused on voice support, and the early short-range wireless data networks, through to today’s 3G cellular and mobile broadband systems; there is every confidence that the trend will continue some way into the future.

Evolutionary Computation (EC) deals with problem solving, optimization, and machine learning techniques inspired by principles of natural evolution and ge- netics. Just from this basic definition, it is clear that one of the main features of the research community involved in the study of its theory and in its applications is multidisciplinarity. For this reason, EC has been able to draw the attention of an ever-increasing number of researchers and practitioners in several fields.

Since the telephone was invented in the late nineteenth century, there has been a steady development of telephone services, and the number of subscribers has con- tinuously increased. One of the most revolutionary developments in telephone serv- ice in the late twentieth century was the introduction of the cellular variety of mobile phone services.

The aim of this book, the first of two volumes, is to present selected research that has been undertaken under COST Action IC0902 ‘‘Cognitive Radio and Net- working for Cooperative Coexistence of Heterogeneous Wireless Networks’’ (http://newyork.ing.uniroma1.it/IC0902/). COST (European Cooperation in Sci- ence and Technology) is one of the longest-running European frameworks sup- porting cooperation among scientists and researchers across Europe.
