Mobile radio networks have risen in prominence over the last few years, primarily by the rise in popularity of cellular phones. It is important to recognise however that mobile radio technology fulfils a far wider range of applications that meet the demands of the modern world. These include the networks that allow police and emergency services to serve the public, military networks for operations and humanitarian support, and the mobile technol- ogies that are vital to the safety of aircraft.

Wireless metropolitan area networks (WirelessMANs) is emerging as a promising broadband wireless access (BWA) technology to provide high-speed, high bandwidth efficiency and high-capacity multimedia services for residential as well as enterprise applications. It is observed that WirelessMAN (e.g., WiMAX) is even regarded as a 4G technology. For the success of the WirelessMANs, international standardization organiza- tions are very actively specifying the standards IEEE 802.16, ETSI HiperMAN and Korea WiBro.

The last decade proved to be hugely successful for the mobile communications industry, characterised by continued and rapid growth in demand, spurred on by new technological advances and innovative marketing techniques. Of course, when we refer to mobile commu- nications, we tend to implicitly refer to cellular systems, such as GSM. The plight of the mobile-satellite industry over the last decade, although eventful, has, at times, been more akin to an out of control roller coaster ride.

This paper covers the keynote address delivered by the Chairman of the COST Action 285 at the Symposium. Mobile wireless communications are in constant evolution due to the continu- ously increasing requirements and expectations of both users and operators. Mass multimedia* services have been for a long time expected to generate a large amount of data traffic in future wireless networks [1]. Mass multimedia services are, by definition, purposed for many people. In general, it can be distinguished between the distribution of any popular content over a wide area and the distribu- tion of location-dependent information in highly populated areas. Representative examples include the delivery of live video streaming content (like sports compe- titions, concerts, or news) and file download (multimedia clips, digital newspa- pers, or software updates).
