The large-scale deployment of the smart grid (SG) paradigm could play a strategic role in supporting the evolution of conventional electrical grids toward active, flexible and self- healing web energy NETWORKs composed of distributed and cooperative energy resources. From a conceptual point of view, the SG is the convergence of information and operational technologies applied to the electric grid, providing sustainable options to customers and improved security. Advances in research on SGs could increase the efficiency of modern electrical power systems by: (i) supporting the massive penetration of small-scale distributed and dispersed generators; (ii) facilitating the integration of pervasive synchronized metering systems; (iii) improving the interaction and cooperation between the network components; and (iv) allowing the wider deployment of self-healing and proactive control/protection paradigms.

Electric distribution NETWORKs are critical parts of power delivery systems. In recent years, many new technologies and distributed energy resources have been inte- grated into these NETWORKs. To provide electricity at the possible lowest cost and at required quality, long-term planning is essential for these NETWORKs. In distribution planning, optimal location and size of necessary upgrades are determined to satisfy the demand and the technical requirements of the loads and to tackle uncertainties associated with load and distributed energy resources.

For more than a century, overhead lines have been the most commonly used technology for transmitting electrical energy at all voltage levels, especially on the highest levels. However, in recent years, an increase in both the number and length of HVAC cables in the transmission NETWORKs of different countries like Denmark, Japan or United Kingdom has been observed. At the same time, the construction of offshore wind farms, which are typically connected to the shore through HVAC cables, increased exponentially.

Modern power systems involve large amount of investment. An electric power system comprises of generation, transmission, and distribution of electric energy. Growth of power systems has led to very complex NETWORKs extended across large areas. In such situations, the proper functioning of a modern power system is heavily dependent upon the healthy operation of the transmission lines within it. Transmission lines are used to transmit a huge amount of power over a long distance. But as these lines are located in the open atmosphere, they are highly affected by different types of abnormal conditions or faults.

Today, electric power transmission systems should face many demanding chal- lenges, which include balancing between reliability, economics, environmental, and other social objectives to optimize the grid assets and satisfy the growing electrical demand. Moreover, the operational environment of transmission systems is becoming increasingly rigorous due to continually evolving functions of interconnected power NETWORKs from operation jurisdiction to control responsibly – coupled with the rising demand and expectation for reliability.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is witnessing a recent explosion of development in both industry and academia. A number of applications include supply chain management, electronic payments, RFID passports, environmental monitoring and control, office access control, intelligent labels, target detection and tracking, port management, food production control, animal identification, and so on. RFID is also an indispensable foundation to realize the pervasive computing paradigm—“Internet of things.” It is strongly believed that many more scenarios will be identified when the principles of RFID are thoroughly understood, cheap components available, and when RFID security is guaranteed.

RFID NETWORKs are currently recognized as one a research area of priority. Research activities related to RFID technology have been booming recently. A number of ongoing projects are being funded in Europe, Asia, and North America. According to leading market analysts, the development of the RFID market is projected to increase from approximately $3 billion in 2005 to $25 billion in 2015. Several countries have dedicated innovation programs to support and develop RFID systems and related technologies: the RFID initiative in Taiwan, Ubiquitous Japan and the NSF SBIR program in the USA. The EU has recently advertised its Strategic Research Roadmap concerning the Internet of Things, which first of all refers to the RFID technology before being extended to commu- nicating devices as in M2M (Machine to Machine). In this roadmap, several application domains have been identified:

Radio frequency identification (RFID) and Wireless sensor NETWORKs (WSN) are the two key wireless technologies that have diversified applications in the present and the upcoming systems in this area. RFID is a wireless automated recognition technology which is primarily used to recognize objects or to follow their posi- tion without providing any sign about the physical form of the substance. On the other hand, WSN not only offers information about the state of the substance and environment but also enables multi-hop wireless communications.

Many applications have required the positioning accuracy of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Some applications exist in environments that attenuate GNSS signals, and, consequently, the received GNSS signals become very weak. Examplesofsuchapplicationsarewirelessdevicepositioning, positioninginsensor NETWORKs that detect natural disasters, and orbit determination of geostationary and high earth orbit (HEO) satellites. Conventional GNSS receivers are not designed to work with weak signals. This book presents novel GNSS receiver algorithms that are designed to work with very weak signals.

If you are acquainted with neural NETWORKs, automatic control problems are good industrial applications and have a dynamic or evolutionary nature lacking in static pattern-recognition; control ideas are also prevalent in the study of the natural neural NETWORKs found in animals and human beings. If you are interested in the practice and theory of control, artificial neu- ral NETWORKs offer a way to synthesize nonlinear controllers, filters, state observers and system identifiers using a parallel method of computation.
