This book describes the applications of the fundamental interactions of ELECTROMAGNETIC waves and materials as described in the preceding volume, “Basic Electromagnetism and Materials”. It is addressed to students studying masters or doctorate courses in electronics, electromagnetism, applied physics, materials physics, or chemical physics. In particular, this volume analyzes the behavior of materials in the presence of an ELECTROMAGNETIC field and related applications in the fields of electronics, optics, and materials physics.

Communication today is not as easy as it was in the past. Protecting numerous com- munication services, which are operating in the same or adjacent communication channels, has become increasingly challenging. Communication systems have to be protected from both natural and manmade interference. ELECTROMAGNETIC interfer- ence can be radiated or conducted, intentional or unintentional.

In recent years, the research and developments in the area of RF and microwave technologies have progressed significantly due to the growing demand for applica- bility in wireless communication technologies. Starting from 1992, wireless com- munication technologies have become quite mature. In the modern era of electronic developments, design of wireless handsets is an example of integration of many di- verse skill sets. Classical books in the areas of microwave technology provide us with an in-depth knowledge of ELECTROMAGNETIC fundamentals.

One of the prerequisites for the development of telecommunication services is the understanding of the propagation of the waves, either acoustic, ELECTROMAGNETIC, radio or light waves, which are used for the transmission of information. In this work, we shall limit ourselves to the study of radio waves: this term apply to the ELECTROMAGNETIC waves used in radio communications. Their frequency spectrum is very broad, and is divided into the following frequency bands : ELF waves (f < 3 kHz), VLF (3-30 kHz), LF waves (30-300 kHz), MF waves (300-3000 kHz), HF (3-30 MHz), VHF waves (30-300 MHz), UHF waves (300-3000 MHz), SHF waves (3-30 GHz), EHF waves (30-300 GHz) and sub- EHF waves (300-3000 GHz).

The unguided transmission of information using ELECTROMAGNETIC waves at radio frequency (RF) is often referred to as wireless communications, the first demonstration of which took place at the end of the 19th cen- tury and is attributed to Hertz. The technology was, shortly thereafter, commercialised by, amongst others, Marconi in one of the first wire- less communication systems, i.e., wireless telegraphy. In the first half of the 20th century the technology was developed further to enable more than the mere transmission of Morse code. This first resulted in uni- directional radio broadcasting and several years later also in television broadcasting.

As we enter the next millennium, there are clear technological patterns. First, the electronic industry continues to scale microelectronic structures to achieve faster devices, new devices, or more per unit area. Secondly, electrostatic charge, electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical overstress (EOS) and ELECTROMAGNETIC emissions (EMI) continue to be a threat to these scaled structures. This dichotomy presents a dilemma for the scaling of semiconductor technologies and a future threat to new technologies. Technological advancements, material changes, design techniques, and simulation can fend off this growing concern – but to maintain this ever-threatening challenge, one must continue to establish research and education in this issue.

Electricity has been chosen as the most convenient and useful form of energy, due to its ease of transportation over large distances and easy conversion to other energy forms. The biggest inconvenience with electricity is that it cannot be stored and must be utilized at the moment of generation. The storage of a large amount of electrical energy is usually connected with its conversion to other types of energy, which significantly reduces the efficiency of such processes. The aim of the power system, often treated as the biggest and the most complex machine ever built, is to deliver uninterruptible electric energy of demanded quality parameters to consumers.

For more than a century, overhead lines have been the most commonly used technology for transmitting electrical energy at all voltage levels, especially on the highest levels. However, in recent years, an increase in both the number and length of HVAC cables in the transmission networks of different countries like Denmark, Japan or United Kingdom has been observed. At the same time, the construction of offshore wind farms, which are typically connected to the shore through HVAC cables, increased exponentially.

There is an unprecedented enthusiasm for radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies today. RFID is based on the exchange of information carried by ELECTROMAGNETIC waves between a label, or tag, and a reader. This technology is currently in full economic expansion, which has manifested itself in widely backed research activities, some of which will be examined in this book.
